Try ING, they won't give you a quote direct but you can get the details of your nearest broker. ING take you UK no claims into account and you can also earn Aeroplan miles with them too.

Is this the norm with all car insurance? If anyone has any reccomendations please PM.

I'm a little worried now to say the least as we are surposed to pick up a car tomorrow and without insurance, we can't get the plate, hense no car.

Please help me fellow expats.
Um. In my experience they (brokers) do give quotes over the phone.
But the quotes vary wildly. Do shop around.

Also, For info, they also accept a letter from your UK insurer and will give you some no-claims (maximum 3 years) if the letter shows you've been good.

That quote is just for Neil, not even both of us.

I have no idea what to do its the first time I've felt so down here. I really feel like crying.
Meh.

I got an online "quote" of $3,500 too when I came here.
I ended up paying $777 on a fair-sized car with my UK no claims taken into account (ING).

For the record, it's a bit more than I was paying in the UK for a similar spec car at $2 == 1UKP.

So relax. it will be high first year but nothing like what you're getting quoted.

I dont pay as little as $777 now, and thats with 10 years of claim free driving in Canada

And thats after shopping around.

When shopping arround make sure all quotes are on a level playing field...same liability coverage (some are $1m, although $2m is now the recomended min) and deductables and same broad range of coverage.

It's interesting to hear what you guys are paying for insurance in Canada. I've just insured my car fully comprehensive for Ā£481.00 and I'm still on a provisional license (just started taking lessons in September) I guess in Canada I'd have been paying a lot more

(Hope you find something more reasonable soon Cassie)

2M! What, in case you run over Donald Trump?

For info Im in my 40s, drive a 2500$ buick and live in a small town in nova scotia.
It's not what you'd call a high risk area.

My broker has me on with ING.

For info for newbies I am told getting house and car insurance from the same firm can save some money too. I missed out. Until April anyway - - bwahahahaha.

Or have to meet medical costs/compensation for those you injure. $2m is not a great deal if you think about it.

I have e-mailed Neil with some other numbers from you folks.

Just to let everyone know that it was TD Insurance that hubby tried to call yesterday and they told him he would have to fill out a form and they wouldn't give him a quote over the phone. Do you think his person knew what they were talking about and can you imagine how long it would take for them to reply to a postal form! I told him to try them again and hope he gets a different person.

I don't understand why we are having this problem when others have said they have had quotes off TD Insurance, most of Edmonton seem to be insured with them.
I had a ridiculous quote from TD. They wouldn't take any of my UK driving experience and would only count it as having my licence since we moved here last year (I've been driving for over 20 years!). The actual quote was $2000, more than I'm paying with ING!!

I use Canada Brokerlink. They have been great, and gave us a discount even without proof of UK no claims.

Living on the border I was told $2m is an absolute minimum.... like you said, put someone in hospital in the US and it's going to be one hefty bill....

We pay $4400 a year for our car insurance - covers 2 cars (Kia Rio and Kia Sportage, so not exactly luxury vehicles) and two drivers.

Freaking ridiculous, we know. We're with State Farm, and that's with 4 years Canadian experience and bringing our no claims over from the UK, and multi-line discounts by having our home and life insurance with them.

The worst thing is that we've been with them for over 2 years, and it's actually gone UP every year.

We've got some time off over Christmas and will finally be doing some leg work to try to get it down.
