Default Capital gains tax

I am in the process of selling my UK investments to transfer them to Canada. I have been in Canada for 8 years and am now a citizen. I have reported my UK investments and dividends annually to Canada and paid any capital gains tax on them.

My UK investments have done very well over the past 8 years and now the thought of paying 50% on those profits is taking a little bit to stomach! I have reviewed Article 13 of the tax treaty between Canada and UK for the avoidance of Double taxation and it appears that I might be able to pay the capital gains tax in the UK rather than in Canada. This would be much more beneficial to me as it is 20% in the UK rather than in Canada.

Does anyone have any experience of doing it this way? Maybe there are other restrictions that will prohibit me from doing it this way that I don't know of.

Or if no-one has specific advice then can you recommend an accountant that does deal with these specific issues? I'm located in Saskatoon but with a lot of people WFH would easily be able to have an online meeting with a specialist in another city if necessary.

Thanks in advance!
