Here is an interesting read for all of those who are here on a temporary work permit or who are still in the process of applying for one:

The article correctly highlights the vulnerability of the foreign temporary worker. But it puts me in mind of an expression that our lovely 'Judy in Calgary' has used on many occasions - when the tough gets going, there is a distinct 'circling of the wagons' ....

i have had that comment directed at me a few times, i just laughed at the person that made it, there is no recession in calgary, especially in the construction industry, lots of useless morons employed here and employers still can't find decent workers.

^^ What He Said! ^^
I also work in construction and work 10-12 hour shifts! Plenty of work and overtime at the moment....... I speak to a lot of trades and no one feels uneasy about work?

Times are changing even in Alberta.
http://www.financialpost.com/news/story.html?id=1160795
"Nowhere was it felt more than in Alberta.
Unemployment in the Western province rose the fastest of any in December to 4.1% from 3.4% the previous month, as its once-rollicking construction sector crumbled, shedding 12,000 jobs as housing starts dried up in the face of plummeting demand. "

I wont be surprised if thats the case. Even here in the UK, immigrants are sometimes blammed for unemployment. People cant just realise that there must be something in a foreigner that an employer agrees to go through the hefty bureaucratic redtape to hire him/her.

The cry becomes "those bloody foreigners who have come and taken all our jobs, why can't they go back to their own country"
I suppose this self pitiful attitude has spread to Canada. Those Canadians would rather work for the pathetic wages some of the immigrants are forced to accept, rather than the alternative of sitting at home and twidling their thumbs. Lets just hope that after wishing all the other immigrants away they don't turn on the brits, because after all, remember in Canada you are just another immigrant.

Forgive me if i appear to be a little lazy for asking as much....
But can those of you working in calgary construction recommend a few company names who might be looking for project office staff?
I have worked over the last decade for architectural practices and lead contractors as an 'information manager' / 'document controller' and I am currently trying to fire off my resume to appropriate people / companies prior to a trip to Vancouver and Calgary in March.
Many thanks...
