Canadian kids born here do tend to take up hockey as their main sport but that is slowly changing due to costs and not all kids are born from families who are followers of hockey. There are more kids registered and playing football (soccer) than hockey.
I do find it strange that there are only 6 Canadian professional hockey teams in the NHL but dozens in the AHL, OHL etc etc.
At least in hockey they have not got to the stage where rival fans have to be segregated and escorted like soccer fans are.
As for other sports Canada has 1 (one) NBA team, 9 CFL teams and 1 Baseball team and 3 x MSL teams so yes choice is limited to watch professional sports teams over here.
That's a good point. I've only been to one game. It was Sens/Leafs, which is a needle match. The fans were mixing freely, including in the beer tent. There was no trouble. Lots of piss-taking and goading but nothing came of it.

It was like being at the Canada Day piss-up at the Maple Leaf pub in Covent Garden

They are not that shit, they make it to the olympics and champions trophy most of the time.

Of course its mostly immigrant offspring that play, but hey, we are all "Canadians" arent we...

Ball hockey is more popular though for the obvious reason that people mostly have the necessary kit easily available, unlike field hockey sticks etc.

Ahhh the good old days of an impromptu game of proper hockey on Wandsworth Plain.

Mrs Botherington-Smythe, can Quentin come out?

You seem to be confusing hockey for rugby?

Or is cricket a class thing too.

However (I'm told), its 20 years since a Canadian team last won the Stanley Cup.

<and yes I know the players aren't all Canadian but still...>

Im pretty sure Canadians are well represented on the teams that have won Lord Stanleys cup too...

Probably fair to say that there are more world class canadian ice hockey players than field hockey players, even taking the greater number of participants into account.

Canadians are not crap at field hockey, but they do seem to excel at ice hockey. Hell, I take my hat off to anyone who can skate that well, never mind playing a game that fast, with all the physical challenges at the same time.

I dont want to watch it though... I cant keep up with the puck, and the subtleties are totally lost on me.

Actually, unless I was ill informed at the Hockey Hall of Fame, Iced Hockey was invented by the British Army in Canada.

Alot of people do not realise that Britain actually won the Ice Hockey gold medal in 1936.

It often saddens me of the attention given to the Boys of 66 when the Boys of 36 were with out question the most complete Iced Hockey team of all time and no cradle winning side has ever got close to lacing their boots or what ever they are called.

I once went to watch Spurs at the Riverside.

We were beaten sorrily 6-1 or so.

When we scored I started leaping around and the steward shouted at me to sit down as standing wasn't allowed. I was literally the only person in the stand!

You would be right. The Bruins won it last year. 18 of their roster of 30 are Canadians.

Subtleties? Oh purleeeze!

1936

"While only one player on the team was born in Canada, nine of the thirteen players on the roster grew up in Canada, and eleven had played previously in Canada."

Modern version, perhaps invented by Brits. The origins of the sport allegedly go back to the Vikings. I can believe that. The mullet was created by Vikings.

The Boston Bruins won the 2011 Stanley Cup. 15 of their 21 players who participated in the finals were Canadian.

The Chicago Blackhawks won the 2010 Stanley Cup. 16 of their 25 players who participated in the finals were Canadian.

It should be noted though that almost all of the British team learned to play ice hockey in Canada, having immigrated here as children.

You are typically British. Embarrassed by this great success.
