I have zero interest in Ice Hockey. Okay, it must be zero +1 or something because I watched that final. Was it really two years ago?
He captained Canada to world Championships. I saw that on the front page of the Montreal Gazette years ago. You'd really have to go some not to have heard of him. Probably a conscious effort to avoid it would be needed.

Now, if was the captain of a Canadian team in a world sport, and football's the obvious one, he'd be as famous as, well, a famous footballer. Someone like Posh's husband or one of those mononomic Brazilians.

To the contrary, most people in the world have not heard of him. If we look at someone of a similar stature in the UK, Jockie Wilson for example, he was "world famous" in the north but virtually unknown outside of the country. You'd have to have a specific interest in iced hockey to know the players, other than those prominent in brand promotion such as Tim Horton or Wayne Gratzky.

And hasn't Sidney Crosby spent the majority of time since then sitting on a bench with concussion?
If Hockey wants to grow it's popularity and have more people watch it on YouTube- they need to clean up the neanderthal parts of the game.

Why must expats pretend they know nothing about hockey? Sure, we dont have to embrace it, but you seriously have to be living under a rock to not know about Crosby and or Olympic Hockey gold.
