And relative to what you paid at home - I just don't get the insurance gripes here as we find it far cheaper. I thought this was because we were in a provincial insurance scheme (MB) until we moved to ON and found the insurance dropped on the same vehicle!

We must have been paying a lot more than the rest of you in the UK.

But I pay $1500+ for car insurance on 2006 Jeep in NL. And that's low compared to the first 3 years! Insurance in the UK was 450 quid if memory serves for a Volvo S60. So in some places in Canada (Maritimes / Atlantic) car insurance is bloody expensive. It's not just about being an immigrant either, it's about not having any no claims history. Mrs AX pays through the nose as well as when she moved back it was the first time she had her own car.

UK - 3yr old Subaru Impreza, rural Worcestershire = 285GBP (full NCB)
BC - New Ford F150 = $1200 (full NCB)

Both comparable policies, fully comprehensive cover.

You might want to check how far you drive each year in Canada vs the UK. I suspect it's 2 to 3 times more in Canada which would explain the insurance.

Actually it's quite the opposite for us. I do around 12,000km's a year here vs a good 15,000 miles in UK. Part of that is living on an Island. I can only drive so far before I fall off.

Yeah but it's a big island !

National Geographic shows the UK as 242,910 sq. km. and NL as 405,212 sq. km. Newfoundlanders have 67% more land.

But rather less in the way of roads. And population (500k vs 56m!). In reality we don't often venture far from St John's, or at least haven't this year. Next year we hope to do the West Coast (so a 350k drive) & do have some wild notion of driving (via Marine Atlantic ferry) to Halifax over Christmas.

It's a different thing to you mainlanders. I can't realistically drive to say Montreal or Ottawa or points in the US without a 12 hr drive and a 8 hr ferry crossing before I start!

I'm rounding these up or down as I can't remember the exact figures but for us it was:

UK
Grand Cherokee Ltd, in Cambs. and latterly West End of Glasgow, 1300 GBP - 1100 GBP
VW Lupo, same locations, 700 GBP and then 600 GBP

Canada
New Kia Sorento EXL 1800 CAD 1st yr, then 1600 CAD - both MB; dropped to 1200 CAD in ON mid-year
2008 Buick Enclave CXL AWD (ON) - in my name (only 3yrs driving exp.) 2100 CAD

I'm pretty satisfied with those prices

And I don't agree with Flash that you drive more here, unless you're doing massive road trips or have had a complete lifestyle change.

It took my nearly a year to get used to the tax You pick something up in a shop for $19.99, head to the till with a crisp $20 note and then have to quickly find the extra $$ for GST and PST (tax)

In general, Canadian prices at least seem cheaper but they are always add costs involved that they never put in the advertised price. Cell phones for example. You have to pay $0.50 or maybe $2.50, I can't remember but never mind, per month to have the ability to make 911 calls - WHAT???? I rarely leave downtown Vancouver, or if I do, I am in remote places with no cell phone coverage, but still have to pay. You also have to pay for incoming calls, caller ID, voicemail, have a 3 year contract to get a vaguely decent phone.

Hiya, I'm new here.

I have a job to go to in St John's Newfie (for Downhome magazine) and that's all sorted, nearly there with Services Canada, so 20 days time, should get the okay (although can't sell the blo*dy house).

I read all the price comparisons on hear and it's really interesting for my personal budgeting.

But, is it more expensive in Newfie then the mainland (sorry if I missed a reply)?

I have so many questions, which I will address in the relevant threads.

Loving this site BTW.

just curious (sorry this won't answer your question) but do people in Newfoundland call it Newfie? I thought that's just what they call themselves not the place?

Hiya - certainly the folks we have come in contact with have used that term.

Newfoundland is very long!

Newfie has a certain ring to it.
