I suspect several dozens of struggling dairy farmers whose wholesale price for milk as beaten down by Tesco's et al is only just above, or in some cases below, their cost of production, might disagree with you. Or at least that subsidies are not being effective in supporting a domestic dairy production business.

You haven't met the thieves managing the water treatment plant for our development. We are currently fighting with the Alberta EUB so that they don't approve the requested $125 per month for 20 m3 plus $4.1 per m3 above that.

These are way more expensive than the UK here in BC anyway.
The problem with comparing costs is that really it is relative to how much you earn. Cheap to some is not necessarily cheap to everyone.

New cars are much cheaper here in Canada. Mazda UK has the Speed3 at £19,495 which is about $40k (even less when the rate was good) and here in BC that same car is $31k about £15,500.
But get this, that same car in the US is $24k !! WTF is that about?

For those of you who have just arrived in Canada do you find car insurance here more or less than UK.
Does electric (hydro) cost more or less?
Because local phone calls in UK are charged by the minute being online must cost more? Here folks can be online all day and it not cost anything.
I am sure there must be other things that are found to be more or less expensive than UK, but right now I can't think of what. So if anything springs to mind add to it.

Absolutely 100% bang on. Comparison of costs C$ to GBP are pretty meaningless IMHO unless you are earning in C$ whatever x the exchange rate you were earning in UK. But if you earn less in Canada (as I do) then costs in Canada are skewed upwards.
