Hi iaink,

Yep I agree to a certain extent, however my current view out of my window in wet miserable grey old England, is one of the house 30 meters away, and where I live in Cochrane the view is of rockies. Although neither of these put food on the table, one makes me more content than the other.

Alas though The same doesn't apply to my wife, she is great to look at and she does put food on the table.

So if you don't like the view....move or get a divorce.

Canada - opportunity (at least today - if you ask a different day - who knows?)

One word that describes Canada? How about "shatpank"?

...but my favourite word is one of these.... Buggaration! This made me chuckle.

Canada - PRECARIOUS
UK - TEMPORARY
I say this as a prospective mover to Canada who has done a lot of research in the last 6 months on the feasability of a move. I've discovered that there has been somewhat of a role reversal between the two countries since I lived there in 70s/80s. UK was down and out. Now it is booming. It's short term future looks good, but due to size and poplulation it cannot be substained. This is why my one word for UK is Temporary. On the other hand Canada was booming. Now it seems to be stagnent and resting on its laurals and natural wealth. It's long term future could be great if managed wisely. This is why for me Canada is Precarious and typically sums my thoughts on a potential move. For future though, I'd have to say that the best word for Canada has to be:
POTENTIAL

in one word?

well, here are several one-word answers, from where i see it:

overrated
cold
plain
big
crazy
cool (as in cool, man!)
unbelieveable
weird
nice
strange
materialistic
stressed (in some places)

hows that for a mixture of vibes i get about canada?

I agree, although my impressions of Canada were limited to a very small part of Ontario and just two weeks, My overriding image was that Canada has so much potential, in its natural resources, In the Canadian people, and the newcomers to the Country yet much is squandered and there is a great need for a strong long-sighted Government devolopment and protection policy to maximise the growth without harming the resources.

Regrettably the business, transport, and Industry infrastructure has not yet had time to mature fully, to match countries like the UK, but given time and the right Government, who knows....

Exactly how I feel not only about my future but more importantly my children's. Great response. What I like about the whole idea is not only is it a new start in our lives which can be either going to a new country or returning after years to the one you were born in - either is a new start. Life is a series of sections and it is important to realise that as one door closes, and to see it is closing, another will eventually open and one needs to recognise that if you continue staying in the same room that you want to get out of for whatever reason you realise you are eventually going to go mad inside. As a 40+ something I see the UK as a weathly country and with huge abilities but with little future on a world scale unless you are sitting at the top already. The 'Empire' was at its peak only 100 years ago and look at it now. The Commonwealth is a tenuious recollection of the past. The future consists of the European Union, USA, China, India and Russia as the leaders. Canada sits very nicely in there with natural wealth, a relatively small population and the world at its feet if it can achieve the population, talent and creative growth that it is looking for. The British really did rule the waves and the world economy in Queen Victoria's days. Since then country after country has declared independence and pulled that ever more away from the ruling elite as they were seen and they will continue to do so. Canada to me is a place where my wife and I can have some opportunities but I hope my children will have many more than in the UK.
