COuld be that if you have the PR card that the passport is optional, Im not sure.

My point was there is no legal obligation to have the PR card to drive over the border; Your UK passport and COPR/ ROLF form legally are sufficient, and they dont have a leg to stand on if they give you a hard time for not having the card. You just might want to choose your words carefully when informing them of their oversight...

You might need it to get back in though. They always ask to see it.

I'm sure I've seen separate lines at Pearson as well.

I will concede two lines at pearson. 8 hours on a plane and an early start never do my powers of observation much good.

PR card on re-entry...definitiely not part of the law. Convenient perhaps, but if you dont have it driving over the border they are not within their rights to deny entry.

Have landed in Toronto more times then I can count, unless it has changed within last 6 months, there is no specific line for citizen or PR's that differ from visitors, we have landed at extremely busy time and waited as well along with everyone else.

That's useful to know, in case I forget the damn thing.

What if you have a new passport and so the original cancelled PR visa isn't in there? They could refuse you if you can't prove you are resident??? ie entering Canada without a return ticket and all that?

I did know a Canadian/British citizen travelling on a British passport who had to go to the 'special room' for a chat when she forgot her citizenship card. I supposed that was because she travelled on a British passport and had no proof of citizenship. Drivers license, OHIP card, Govt employee ID etc but there were not happy. Similar sort of thing.

You need proof of status. The ROLF/ COPR form is that, as is the PR card.

Without either it could get interesting, but if you are a PR you should eventually get in, probably after getting the lecture, if not a cavity search...

You have to remember that the PR card exists for the convenience of the commercial carriers, who dont want to foot the bill to return any inadmissible people back from whence they came. The immigration people have several other ways to determine any persons status I suspect.

Citizenship is a tricky one because you surrender your ROLF when they award it to you, so dont have much proof other then the (to my eyes) mickey mouse laminated citizenship card, and thats a pain as its not a convenient size and you cant really staple it to anything, so it is a bit easy to loose. Another reason to get a canadian passport I guess.

With the cooler weather I grabbed a jacket out of the closet and was a little surprised to find my passport in the pocket... I guess I havent worn it since my trip to the motherland in June!

Sometimes when I cross the border, no form of ID is necessary Seems that an Ontario plated car is enough....

But yes, when they do want something, PR card is preferable as it's easier for them to scan, but a passport with COPR is fine too...
