Just wondering as I've been a PR for three months and taking a trip home soon and wasn't sure if upon my arrival to Canada if i can go through the same line as Canadians or the one i've always gone through??

Upon returning to YVR after a flight from the States recently I went through the 'Residents of Canada' channel (as opposed to the visitors one - obviously,I'm not a visitor). The machines at YVR read either a Canadian passport barcode or PR card barcode. You just feed your declaration card into the machine and scan your PR card. It then prints a copy for you to take and you quickly show your passport (British in my case) along with the PR card to the official before heading straight to the baggage claim.

You have separate lines in Vancouver? Toronto everyone goes through same lines, no favourtism here. We wait forever same as everyone else.

When I came back from the US recently (by road that is) the guy at the border wasn't interested in my passport. He just wanted to see my PR card.

Yep. Right side for visitors, left side for residents and citizens. The left side has fancy technology in the style of a self service check-out where you scan your landing card and passport before legging it past the IO to grab your luggage.

We live hour from border so cross always by car and they keep asking us why husband hasn't applied for citizenship....he's only been here since Easter, can they not read his PR card they are holding in their hand? Both cdn and american CBSA always ask.
We fly back and forth to UK and I much prefer the way they do it in UK, even as the spouse of a British citizen you can go thru the the UK line, but spouse must be with you. Canada(most airports) seems to be the only country that doesn't let their citizens go to shorter line.

Thanks for the replies guys! I was sure in Toronto they had two separate lines though? As in the visitors go to the right and the Canadians go to the left? I just can't wait to show off my PR card when i land back in Canada haha Haven't found a use for it yet....

I went through the fast line at Gatwick on the strength of my expired british passport last time, which was a bonus!

No arguments from me but we have only ever shown our PR card when we have crossed back from the US into Canada. They have never wanted to see our passport. We were told it was not necessary.J
