Default Can we pack into the sea container this stuff?

Hi. Just joined, and very impressed with the forum. Moving to Salt Spring Island BC, and our sea container will arrive in Vancouver. The CBSA sites are helpful but not for specifics. For example, can we pack and send homemade jams and preserves, dried herbs and spices? We are foodies, and would hate to give up some of this stuff. We have several antique (old) deer and elk antlers most of which are mounted. Can we bring these in the container? And can we bring in used garden tools? Sorry to bang on, but we tried to search for some of this stuff here, but with 500+pages got eye strain! Hope someone can help us. And thanks.

I strongly advise against packing liquids of any kind. Your moving company ought to give you a list of what you can and cannot ship. Liquids most likely will be on the list of forbidden products. If a bottle breaks and the contents stain or otherwise damage other items in your shipment, your insurance company probably will not reimburse you.

dried herbs and spices
These are okay.

The international relocation process involves a lot of gains and losses, and this is one of the losses.

Yes, but I believe there may be some extra paperwork that you have to complete.

And can we bring in used garden tools?
Yes, but you must scrub clean all items that have been used outdoors -- patio furniture, bicycyles, gardening tools, etc.

In addition to that, if you have a gasoline (petrol) fuelled lawn mower, you must drain it of fuel before you ship it.

Since you're getting ready to move, you may find it useful to read the Wiki article entitled Departure To Do List, if you haven't already stumbled on it.

Hi Saltspringers, we live just over the water from Saltspring Island in the Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island. In fact I have just got back from Cherry Point beach where I have been looking at the seals swimming in the sea between us and Saltspring Island. Been to Saltspring a few times, a very nice place with a very laid back atmosphere. Good luck and best wishes

If you bring in any food then you'll be asked for an itemised list, and we were advised against it as it 'attracts attention' and may result in you having your container opened. Booze is okay, again as long as it's itemised, this time you need to estimate a value to each bottle and have a liquor license - your agent this end will do the latter for you. Outdoors stuff, inc garden equipment, riding gear etc will need to be cleaned and disinfected. Again, we needed an itemised list for the guys in Vancouver.
Not sure about moose heads - like bringing coals to Newcastle?

Dear New Salts: I reccomend against trying to bring in the moose heads. Special permits are required and it can be a big big deal if you get caught bringing them across the border without this see story at site below.
