Default Calgary - what's it really like?

Hello all

Phew! I've just got off the phone after a 45 minute second interview with a company with offices in Edmonton and Calgary......how strange was that - having an interview at 23:00hrs GMT? Hopefully went OK - seemed like good guys.

Looks like Calgary is going to be my most likely destination (small chance of Edmonton perhaps). So what's Calgary really like then? In particular as an expat - how do you find the natives attitude towards you?

Cheers

Depends what you want out of life.

In that respect I have found the natives to be very positive. Until the recent crazy boom in the oil industry, there was an above average (even by Canadian standards) tendency to demand that people being interviewed for jobs had "Canadian experience." For the time being that attitude has pretty much been abandoned. But if you come here with a job in hand, it won't be relevant to you anyway. As far as other dealings with people are concerned (friendliness of nextdoor neighbours, teachers' cordiality towards kids, etc.), we have found Calgary to be a congenial place.

you'll find it hard to settle in by using the terminolgy 'natives' ; you'll find the correct terminolgy for the indigenous population these days is first nations

i would have serious reservations about coming out here until you get with the lingo

Hey Beaverquest,

large assumption by you me thinks, that ARH meant first nation people, maybe you who should not jump to conclusions so quickly and assume that Natives did not refer to locals in Calgary Flames tops on a Sat night.

Dont worry, you certainly aren't the first to be on the receiving end and I'm sure not the last. Good luck

Is it B&Q he/she is looking for or is the "quest" for Beaver Lumber stores??

Unfortunately the quest will be in vain, Beaver Lumber Stores were taken over by Home Hardware Stores Ltd in 1999.

Home Hardware bringing Beaver Lumber into the fold.

Cheers
Steve
