I believe you are correct and things have improved immensely in the last ten or so years. Before then it wasn't unusual at all to be asked for your SIN number at any number of places, when paying by cheque (not that many people do that any more) or purchasing large items.

Never had a problem with my credit rating and luckily very, very few people with the same last name so not much chance of deadbeats with same.

That's precisely what I'm thinking of doing. I spent 5 years in Liverpool because my husband's business was there, wanting to be in London the whole time. I still have a desire to do so.
