Default Bedding

We're just in the process of buying new beds and bedding as we didn't bring any beds from the UK. I've only checked in a few shops but do Canadians not use duvets with duvet covers on? All I have found is comforters which are like a quilt. I have managed to find a nice 'bed in a bag' set for our bed, but I am struggling to find nice bedding for the kids. Where can I buy character 'bed in a bag' or duvet cover sets reasonably priced? Am I looking in the wrong shops? I've looked at Home Sense and Walmart, but the character stuff at Walmart was that horrible nylon material and they only did comforters. Any ideas?

Thanks
Mel

you need to go a tad more upscale than Walmart. You can find a lot online. http://www.elegantlinenspc.com/down-duvets-duvet.htm
http://www.thebeddingplace.com/product/G-308004

But depending where you live, a large city perhaps, there should be quality bedding stores around.
I live in a town of 17,000 people and there is a store here that sells quality duvets. Try the yellow pages of your phone book under bedding. But quality down filled duvets will cost you.

HBC http://shop.hbc.com/webapp/wcs/store...rm=down+duvets

from Sears. http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000J...e&mqnodeid=APS

We are taking over a double bed with us (to use as a guest bed) and bought a new duvet so we can use our own duvet sets on it. We will buy new beds for the kids and ourselves but as the kids are getting older I will probably buy them adult sized beds.

Had a look at Wikipedia for bed sizes. Can I presume that Canadian bed sizes are the same as US?

I was surprised at the COST of duvet covers...honestly considered going into business just importing them for what must be a huge profit. I mean, really, who pays $350 for a double duvet cover...cotton, not silk or anything *sigh* Anyways, in the end I found some nice duvet covers for $30 at the Canadian Superstore. The duvets I bought at The Bay and some other bedding at linen 'n things.

Good luck!

Why not try IKEA? They have cheap bedding. It's not of great quality though.

Default Duvet Covers Etc.

Hi Mels,

I really regret not bringing all my bedding (especially duvet covers) to Canada.

As you've discovered, duvet covers are available but they tend to be expensive and from high-end shops. I have found some in larger Walmarts but they weren't particular nice or cheap.

I purchased a king size duvet in Walmart (I think it was from the large Walmart in Port Alberni). This would be a UK Super-king. I managed to get 2 Super-king duvet covers from UK House of Fraser and these fitted perfectly. I got them in a sale, and were a great bargain.

As previous posters said, someone could do very well importing bedding from the UK. I think you could take Tesco duvet covers and do very well!

We've also looked extensively in Washington, and haven't had much luck there!

Sarah

Hi Mel

I know an American kids bedding company which are fantastic. email me at home if you are interested and I will find the link. Obviously you would have to pay P&P but I haven't seen Canadian bedding for kids yet that is as nice as this.
We bought some for our little boy when we were in the states. They have all the accessories to go with the theme you choose.

I know Sears has been mentioned but I would also check in the largest competitors shops, The Bay in Canada is probably Canada's answer to Marks & Spencers in the UK. It's not the most expensive, and sure as heck aint the cheapest, but usually can find fairly decent stuff especially during their sales. Website link:

http://www.hbc.com/landing.html

The same company also owns Home Outfitters and Zellers (low priced shopping), Home Outfitters are very good location to shop for variety of patterns/designs of bedding, bathroom and other home decor items.

Just to quickly share with you my experience... when I moved to the UK I brought my rather expensive bedset I had purchased in Canada the year previous for a Queen Sized bed... I get to the UK and we have a King Size duvet & matress etc and my Queen Size *just* fits the UK king bed but has a bit of extra material... sizes are NOT the same between UK and N.A bedding sizes... in Canada my partner and I can both roll over without bumping into each other on the Queen size I had there... here in the UK with a King size bed, no such luck, we inevitably bump into each other when we both roll over in bed. Can't give you the specifics but there is a definate size difference in mattresses and bedding between the two continents.

'Bed in a bag' quite often have duvets with permanent covers, more like what I see here in the UK, very often Canadians brand these as comforters as usually only genuine duvets (aka, feather goose, duck etc blankets with possible quilted pockets through it or just one piece) any synthetic filler material that is NOT feathers, are called comforters, not duvets. So depending what you define as a 'duvet' you may be looking at the same thing but calling it a different name.

Personally, I love my 15 tog goose feather king size duvet we have here in the UK, nice and warm in the winter, cant stand it on warm nights though, too blinkin hot.. we have another synthetic skinnier duvet for use in spring/autumn when the temps are not so cold.
