Default BC Healthcare costs compared to UK

Hi guys,

Could someone please break down the healthcare costs in BC.
I am on regular medication, but since i have an exemption, I don't pay for prescriptions in the UK.
I am worried if this is going to be an ongoing cost in BC...this will heavily influence my decision to migrate (unless the cost is reasonable).

Cheers

Depends on the medication, and whether or not you'll be paying full price for it or have some kind of insurance provided (i.e. through employment). If you can give more details, then people can help you work out a likely monthly cost.

okay, it's for generalized epilepsy. cost in UK is zero since you get an exemption card.
i wont have any insurance from employment for now. but happy to subscribe to some sort of insurance if it helps (and also other medical costs i.e. GP visits).

things like GP visits are covered by BC MSP but not dental, opticians, ambulances (I think) and prescription drugs. As you currently pay zero you will defiantly be paying more, even with employer shared benefits programs there is typically a co-pay. There is also a dispensing fee.

you can use the tool below to look at specific drug prices by area.

Thank you.

Looking at around $110 per month. Is that pretty decent?
Makes you appreciate NHS, I guess it will be lot worse in US.

You will also have mandatory monthly premiums to pay for BC Healthcare until January 2020 (and also potentially co-pay for a company benefits scheme - usually optional - which generally cover dental, glasses, medications - up to a maximum amount a year). You also need to add in the dispensing fees

Costco tend to be one of the cheaper places to get medications. no membership necessary.

Many of us have Extended Health Plans in addition to the MSP (remembering that MSP is compulsory unless you are low income). Extended Health Plans are private plans, several insurers offer them and you just have to work out which plan works best for you.

OH had an Extended Health Plan and a Dental Plan through the benefits scheme where he worked, but we have had to pay all the premiums ourselves since he retired, even though we still use the university's scheme.

Just a thought ...... does anyone know if epilepsy could restrict entry to Canada???????
