This question usually is asked by British hair stylists rather than barbers. When they have reached Alberta, they've had to do an exam in order to get a licence. Those who have done it have reported that it has been easy.

Red Seal is an organization that certifies skilled tradespeople in Canada. If you pass the Red Seal exam, then every province will accept your qualification.

Here is a list of Red Seal trades. You'll notice that hairstylist is one of the listed trades, but the hairstylist designation includes barbers.

This page of the Red Seal website has links to the trades recognized by each province.

A common complaint on this forum is that Canadian hairstylists and barbers are crap. I don't know if that's true or not. I've been happy with hairstylists (some native Canadians, some not) during my 31 years in Canada. But it's the subject of regular and ongoing debate here. Anyway, regardless of the truth, many British expats are delighted to hear of a British hairstylist or barber in their area.
