baby cafe halifax
Hi there
I just wanted to get some feedback about opening a baby cafe in downtown Halifax. I am moving to Halifax with my Canadian husband and three children in June. I am a part-time teacher here but I understand that I will need to re-qualify when I get to Canada-particulary as I attained QTS throught the Graduate Training Programme- an emplyment based route which is not recognised in Canada. So...to cut a long story short, I have been thinking about alternative jobs. Having been to Halifax a number of times, I was struck by the lack of facilities for mothers with young children, especially cafes where mothers can breast feed in a comfortable environment. I know that for me, being able to meet up with friends in a child-friendly environment was a very welcome and necessary distraction and it kept me sane!
Does anyone know if there any such cafes in Halifax and if not, do you think there would be a market for such a facility?
Any feedback would be great. Thanks!

Cant speak for Halifax, but we (well, not me, the OH) have breast fed two kids here more or less wherever necessary, and its never been a problem... And even out here in the darklands of the Ontario boonies there are at least a couple of places where mothers and kids can go to escape the house...

I know this doesn't help much but there does appear to be demand anywhere there's kids.
We're in Calgary and my grandchildren get taken here occasionally they love it.

Hi
I find Halifax and NS very baby/child friendly in general (I have a 3 yr old). The following are places we go quite regularly. There are also a couple of general family/kids info sites which may be of interest to you. I have not had personal experience with the breast-feeding but the last article would indicate a need for a friendly cafe or two! and perhaps some education on hospital policy?
If you are seriously thinking about this then my tip would be start researching the business set up regulations etc, try http://gov.ns.ca/snsmr/business/

Business: Full-service coffee shop with separate areas for parents and tots (six months to six years). It also serves ice cream, pastries and fruit smoothies.
