But marmelade and Bisto in all its glorious forms are so easily found here at the regular supermarket?

Re: anyone had problems bringing in BISTO

I only half jest. On my first trip back I borrowed a suitcase from the MIL - my goodies bag was bursting at the seams :o

Second trip - hardly anything - just Calpol and a couple of bits.

Having said that, I prefer the low salt bisto granules to others. I mean, it's a bundle of chemicals anyway, might as well mitigate the sodium intake!

Nowadays, I'm cured thank you. Not much on the cravings list at all - apart from fresh baby sweetcorn which I still haven't seen anywhere (easily accessible).

Not Bisto Best, which is the only gluten free variety of Bisto.

My wife declared that she was bringing in Tesco's instant gravy powder when she returned into Ottawa last May - it was confiscated :(

thats my worry

Re: anyone had problems bringing in BISTO

Do you know why? I wonder if people think their are meat products in 'Beef Gravy' etc - but there really are not - well, not in Bisto anyway. That stuff's been no-where near an animal, apart from the one's grazing outside the chemical plant where it's made....

MB-Realtor Jan 21st 2009 10:46 am

Re: anyone had problems bringing in BISTO

Some of the Bisto's do have meat extract and thats not allowed, just check the ingredients, any meat at all and its a no go.

MB-Realtor Jan 21st 2009 10:49 am

Re: anyone had problems bringing in BISTO

I thinks its "Bisto Best" thats a real problem as it say "with real meat flavor.

Re: anyone had problems bringing in BISTO

It all depends on what side of the bed the customs officer got out of bed that morning (they can be very fickle) and whether you're prepared to answer his/her questions honestly.
If you declare you're bringing in foodstuffs it is likely they'll be confiscated or the products opened to ensure no drugs. If you don't declare and customs decide to search your luggage and the foodstuffs are discovered then prepare yourself for a possible full body cavity search (just joshing, I think). Lying to them is not recommended although many/most do it.

Not in this part of the world! My Mum sends me the stuff when I run out. Last time she asked if I needed some more, I did say - don't worry Mum, I've got to get used to the local stuff at some point. Bless her a box arrived last week:thumbsup:

no problems taking in bisto, but had my haggis confiscated  had to laugh - the reason the guy gave was mad cow disease and bird flu - it's made with blimin lamb.

any time I've declared that I've had foodstuff I've had to show them what it is. one time did see a guy who didn't declare he had food - had a whole case of stuff including weird pickled meat and stuff - he was getting yelled at big time by the customs people and i think got a fine as well.

I saw a woman caught caught with a salami at Pearson. She was shot.

Just a side note for anyone planning a trip across the border camping this summer - make sure you don't stock up on beef or citrus.;) They will check your fridge.

Just stick it in your suit case and no one will know.

Christ, I'm planning on asking the in-laws to put a small cool bag in theirs so they can bring me some sausages!

I got a bollocking yesterday by an immigration official yesterday for missing out a section on my landing card. I didn't have anything to declare ('ish), so I left it blank. Naughty, naughty, naughty. I can't imagine what they do to someone with a pound of chipolatas.

They should also be declared. I've been told off for not declaring, as food, a bar of Toblerone I'd bought in the duty free shop at LHR.

Much depends on the officer you find yourself in front of. I try to avoid women, particularly Asian ones. I've idea why it is but they seem to be the most officious and little-Hitlerish.

Tea bags and jaffa cakes are OK.

Meat and any meat products are NOT. And if they don't declare it, let's hope the sniffer dogs are not working that day

Seriously - don't ....

MB-Realtor Jan 22nd 2009 6:56 am

Re: anyone had problems bringing in BISTO

ann m is correct they do have sniffer dogs trained for meat (as well as more exotic substances), I've seen one in action in St John's.

If you do get caught the products will be confiscated, you may be fined, and you will be searched every time you enter Canada for the next 5 years.

My wife has 3 local butchers who make the 6 varieties of British Sausages, Pork Pies and Bacon she sells, so if you ask around your area you may find a Butcher who can help you.
