Financial Services? Canada's banking system is generally regarded as the best in the world - it's ranked #1 by the World Economic Forum. Is Canada's aerospace industry 2-10 years behind the UK? Biotechnology? Canada is a world leader in bio-agriculture. Oil industry? Chemical industry? Software Development? Renewable Energy? Life Sciences? Pharmaceuticals? Plastics? Automotive? Canada is also consistently ranked ahead of the UK in education.
OK. So tell me a Canadian bank that is richer and more innovative than HSBC?

Tell me a petroleum company in Canada that is richer and more innovative than Royal Dutch Shell or BP?

Pharmaceuticals look up AstraZeneca and Glaxo Smithkline.

For education I suggest you look up global university rankings.

Tell me when they are going to bring online shopping into Canadian Supermarkets?

Tell me when people in Canada are going to stop driving these huge engined environment destroying cars?

And for goodness sake please tell me when Rogers are going to update my cable interface- that is at least 15 years behind?

When are we going to get faster subway trains and not have to wait 7 minutes?

When are we getting streetcar shelters that tell us how far away the next street car is?

What software has been developed in Canada? Most software companies don't even have a presence in Canada they fulfill the canadian market from the US.

2 to 10 years in nearly every industry and very apparent when you move to Toronto.

Depends what a younger person likes to do. Toronto has more 'city stuff', but Vancouver has more 'outdoors' stuff' close at hand

Vancouver has mountains right next door (like, right next to it) so easy for skiing etc. Either city, I imagine, set up well for playing regular team sports. Toronto is soccer mad; tonnes and tonnes of 'pick-up' games in the city April to Oct (I play in one). Pick-up just means turn up and play, essentially.

There's so much to argue about here that I hardly know where to start. So let's start with education:

Not forgetting most ranking lists originate from the US and UK. If you look further afield UofT and McGill are often amonst the top unis...or at least they were when we looked 8 or so years ago.

You'll find 4 UK Universities in the top 10.

See number 19 before Canada has one.

Further education is more important to a countries industry development than a survey of 15 year olds which has very little to do with Canada lagging the UK by 2 to 10 years.

You mean this GSK? The global company that has a strong presence in Canada? And is using researchers from Montreal's McGill University?

Oh my God! Are you serious?

Ever heard of Open Text? The world leader in content management software? This is a Canadian company based in Waterloo.

Ever heard of Corel? Clue - Paint Shop Pro, WinDVD, CorelDRAW, WordPerfect. Another clue - Ottawa.

Ever heard of Research In Motion? Clue - Blackberry. Another clue - Waterloo.

You think Microsoft doesn't have a presence in Canada? Wrong!

These lists, like the best schools in a given city, best cities of the world to live in, are only meaningful from one or two angles; they don't give the full picture of how a country, school or city is actually doing.

For example, check out: http://sciencewatch.com/dr/cou/2010/10decALL/

This shows that Canada holds itself up well against other nations in terms of published academic research. When you consider that Canada only has half the population of the UK and one third the population of Gernmany it looks even better. So in a league of papers published vs number of faculty publishing Canada will probably surpass the UK and many other nations apart from the US. I'd say frmo this that Canadian universities are in pretty good shape overall ...
