when i first got here I just raided the home depot for the hard hat, nail bag, hammer and tape.. Quality to price ratio is pretty good.. Most carpenters in the vancouver area like using these stiletto hammers but they cost around 250 dollars, although they are very light which is nice, I just use a 30 dollar one from home depot though and it's survived since 2012 ... Not sure what kind of tools you are looking for but working as a carpenter the boss usually provides most of the tools I'd use(it seems that's normal here), so I found the home depot to be adequate for anything I'd need.
The hard hat you can get in the home depot isnt great but it does the job, I don't know about vancouver but there is a safety gear shop near the columbia street sky train station in new westminister, it's pretty good.. Also People here like to go to marks work wear house but I find that a pretty expensive place.. Although cheap work boots here are really terrible quality, comfortable enough but they fall apart so quickly, probably best to invest in some good ones from marks..

is possibly one of the more expensive answers. We find them expensive even after their discounts.
Try KMS Tools or HD Supplies if there is a local one.
Mark's is another option for PPE.
PPE isn't cheap in Canada, compared to the UK, for the same stuff.

You can get basic ones for $10 at Marks. Most of the guys I work with have the $35 ones.

You could also check out Army & Navy they have a big selection. Based in Gastown. Not sure if they are anywhere else.
KMS Tools is great for tools, make sure you sign up for there free membership so you get the member prices.

what about 3 Vets at 2200 Yukon, near Cambie?
They used to carry a selection of high visibility clothing ..... had to buy some for our daughter years ago!
or am I just being very naive??
