Default Another telephone i/v

this time with a company in Halifax. What with our house move and now this, my head is going in about 7 different directions at once. Shouldn't complain....at least companies are still responding, but I had kinda resounded myself to carrying on with life here.

Anyway, I will let you you what happens.... I have the distinct feeling that they didn't read my email properly and don't realsie the procedures for getting LMO for a HRSDC Work Permit, but time will tell.

Paul.

OMG Paul, what a roller coaster ride you're having I really sympathise about being pulled in different directions though and not knowing what to do. Good news that companies are still interested in you. What will be, will be. I hope you get some closure to your Canada saga soon, it does your head in after a while doesn't it

Yes it does. Have to be careful what I say as it can very easily sound as though ' you don't know you're born ' when other people are struggling without the opportunities I have had so far.

We are still pressing ahead with our move ( 3 more viewers tonight and hopefiully get an offer for the house ) so if we end up moving twice, so be it.

I guess, even assuming we went over on WP, that we might not get Residency after that, as we didn't have the job at time of submission of the application. BUT.....I don't think the company will go through the hoops needed as, as opposed to the last position I went for, this isn't a managerial position it is for a lead software tester. If it was me doing the hiring as I have in the past ... I wouldn't bother with all the hassle

OK ... update.

Another good interview with no awkward silences and a rough rundown of the highlights following the 'what we do, what do you do' stuff :

him-what salary are you looking for ?
me - no idea as you know all my research has been done based on Ontario following my interviews in London, Ont
him - well your skill set and business experience are a perfect fit for what we are looking for, and we have found very little around Nova Scotia
me - oh right
him - we were looking around the $55k to $60k mark for the position
me - oh right...... long pause
him - what are you on in the uk ?
me - well that sort of meaningless due to differences in cost of living, housing etc but to give you an idea I'm on the equivalent of $90,000 plus bonuses/benefits and the position I was looking at in Ontario had a salary range of $75k to $100k, but I wasn't expecting to be pitched at the higher end.
him - well I think we need to offer you more than the $55k- $60k due to the excellent skill set and your vast business experience in our business area so I will have a word with HR
me - ok
him - next step I need to get Doug the Teck to have a chat with you then get you over here for a face to face for sure
me - that would be fine, been a pleasure talking to you Ron speak to you soon.

Done.

And after all the other interviewing I went through in London, Ont, I was and still am actually, totally relaxed and nonchalent about it which surprises me ( my wife is being the same ). We both feel, if it happens it happens..... no biggy, which I think is the right way to go afetr the disappointment of getting so close last time.

He also raised the point of Work Permits and didn't seem phased by it or the wait time for them. I guess if you want something you can wait to get it right ( God that sounded big headed I didn't mean it that way ).

But as I say....we are both .....well whatever..... and I think that helped in the interview, we shall see. It would certainly be different as the number of people in the company is less than the number of people I currently have reporting to me !

So, I need to get some research done for good areas around Halifax within a good commute coupled with good schools which is essential ( not just newly built but ones with good results and good reputations ) and start looking at property prices. There certainly doesn't seem to be the choice that there was in London - the search on MLS only kicks back less than a dozen in each of the selections in a price range between $200k and $300k, so I need to look at that more.

Areas so far recommended have been -

Lawrencetown ( although there are two on the map I presume its the onejust se of Halifax not the one up north near Middleton )
Cole Harbour
Bedford
Hammon Plains
Fall River

Anyway, thanks for the well wishes....again... we will sit back and what happens happens eh for sure.

Thanks for the update Paul. Sounds like your interview went well. I hope it works out for you soon and you get the result you want (whether you stay here or end up in Canada). What will be, will be ..........

Word of warning and not wanting to spill water on your fire, what you get offered and what you get can be totally different.
HRDC have to give the post a certificate for a foreign worker to take the post.

AFAIK the HRDC labour market opinion that you offer skills not available in the local market (or that the company cannot attract) makes no representations as to what the employer pays you at all. The process is also not onerous at all for the employer although it does require their HR department to think a little out of the box!

Paul, Sounds like a very positive outcome. I think you have the right attitude and handled the salary question in the only reasonable way possible. (I did a very similar thing when interviewed for my first job here.) Fingers crossed and all that.

Another area to add to your list would be Beaverbank. We spent the last four days staying with friends there. About 35-40mins drive to Halifax, Ruralish with big lots but 10mins from shopping in Lower Sackville. Cant comment on schools etc though but mebbe worth considering.

Cheers,
AX
