I think it was Dave Allen who said the joke about Irish jokes, people in the UK tell stories about the daft Irish people, people in the Ireland tell stories about the daft Dublin people, people in the Dublin tell stories about the daft McKelvey Ave people and people in the McKelvey Ave tell stories about the daft people at number 32!!

In mainland Europe they tell Belgian jokes..

Apparently the people from my country shag sheep and we're all called Taff's, although Taff is the river in Cardiff and I'm certainly not from cardiff.

One thing we can do which perhaps North American's are not so good at is to e able to laugh at ourselves.



Oh and wasn't fag originally an English public school thing, the new boy allocated to one of the senior boys to become his servant for the first year..

Yes- it does make me chuckle.

When I first went to Toronto I stayed in student accomodation near Bloor & Spadina. There was a church opposite with a huge banner saying "We Approve of Gay Marriage". All us people from the UK would stand outside having our photo's taken.

My favourite photo though is taken outside the "Condom Shack"!!!

Canadians do have humour- just different!

I dont mean to sound like a grumpy old fart but I thought this forum was about emigrating and NOT about racism and homophobia.

I'm assuming there are gays and people from different ethnic backgrounds who visit this forum and its up to us as Brits, to show everybody that we are here to help them and NOT ridicule them.

I am sure there are people here with racist and homophobic views and if so, please keep it to yourselves. Its not about being PC its about being mature and showing respect to others.

You can still show humour and not be disrespectful to others. :)

Go read Chumley's thread then come back here and spend your time digging at people who were just having a laugh at a joke (no doubt you will say at someone elses expense) but hey ho if you want to have a dig about me - I'm an Essex girl - so used to the jokes - then go ahead cos making someone smile is worth it - and the best thing about life is being able to laugh at yourself - whoever you are or where ever you are from. I'm sure at some point in all of our lives we will laugh or mock someone that somebody else thinks is wrong but having different opinions is what makes the world goes round ............

I agree with you that its nice to have a laugh and a joke however racism and homophobia is no joke especially for victims of hate crime. I have read many funny posts on this forum and none of them are racist or homophobic. Everybody has different taste in humour. I dont think anyone was having a dig at you. You and some others became defensive when it was pointed out that the content some were laughing at was racist and homophobic. Mocking someone because of their race or sexuality is wrong. Something you see as a joke might be seen differently by others. :)

The point being that in the context of smoking cigarettes, "fag" is a British slang. We're British.

In the context of the original cartoon, fag is used ambivalently both in that context and as a perjorative towards gay couples.

The intended audience is not obvious, but I suppose a certain group of ignorant Brits might find it titillating.
