There are cases (Quebec Engineers vs Microsoft) of provincial bodies winning court cases due to the use of the title 'Engineer'

Quebec Order of Engineers wins legal battle with Microsoft - Canadian Consulting Engineer

I am not sure where the case is right now but this will continue to be a hot topic going forward.
well yes, that's all lovely, and I'm sure the old boys' club and job protectionist dickwads at PEO and OEQ have all patted themselves on the back for the last however many years. But in the real world, software engineering is still a thing and people who build software are known universally as software engineers. Christ, but PEO need to get the sticks out of their arses and address the real problems of enabling qualified engineers to practice here, and stop the petty squabbles over who can use a common word.

ETA: I have an undergrad engineering degree, and now work in marketing for a software company. From this and previous employment, I know and have worked with many P.Eng, none of whom give a damn about whether software engineers are called engineers or how hard PEO tries to protect the industry or the word. Because they exist in the real world and not in the ivory tower of protectionism that is 40 Sheppard West.
