Hi all,
has anyone imported cars into Canada from Europe? What is a general cost for shipping, conversion etc? I am considering inporting a 1985 Rover SD! VDP Efi (gotta love that tank).
Anything I should know about? Is there any point? Any help or pointers would be great. Additionally anyone knowing of a similair car for sale in Canada already even better.

I read that post, but it just consists of some guy trying to persuade the person asking the questions to buy a minivan. No real answers there.

You can get by the safety and emmisions standards I suspect as its >15 years old, but insuring it and keeping it on the road will be an expensive nightmare, as will be transporting it over. Basically its more trouble than its worth. Sell it in the UK and buy a proper muscle car when you get here.

Thx for the reply. I already live here, going on 8 years now in Montreal, and it is more for the novelty then the practicality, as having as SD1 would be very cool. I Had my Mitsu Eclipse souped up etc, but hanker for the hard shoulder broken down feeling from yester-year.
I think apart from the emisisons etc, which it would sem to be prety exempt at 20 years old, the transport costs are probably horrendous, and that was what I am really looking for, someone who has shipped a car from Europe, and can give me a guesstimate.
Guess I coudl always try & buya 1980 model in the US.

I certainly admire your sense of adventure! I guess the reason they call them "collectors cars" is because you have to stop every five miles and collect the bits that have fallen off

That is a nice one
Why on earth will someone want to bring a 1985 car to canada anyway? I don't care how classic it is, just think all the palaver you have to go through, and the insurance rangles

It can be shipped in a container for less than £1,000. I have read about this being done, it's no big deal. It's getting the Canadians to allow it in that is the problem.

Go for it!
There's quite a few old Minis been brought in, still with their British plates stuck on it (with new canadian plates next to them)

If you're looking for a fuel inefficient indestructable monster, a Dodge Ram has a lot going for it - as mentioned in previous posts, one of them took out an electric commuter trains - it wrote off a carriage.
Calgary is pretty dry - you can spot the BC vehicles by the huge rust holes - there are plenty of huge 1980's Caddies that Huggy Bear would be proud to drive.

I had always wanted to import one of those Smart cars. Gave up on it in the end after deciding it was far too difficult, even if it was possible at all.

We looked at Okotoks last week - they are so enviromentally aware by Calgary standards. The leisure centre near the house we almost bought used solar cells to heat it's water - pretty much standard for public buildings in Okotoks.
And Calgary does what?
