In fact, more so, in many cases.

I see it from the perspective of going into schools - both purely 'white' private schools and purely Muslim schools, and just about every type in between. I talk to kids and teachers and go out into the community and talk to various groups there too.

I have never come across xenophobic attitudes. I don't doubt they exist in the older generations, but then that's the case everywhere. For the most part, the younger generations I deal with are impressively tolerant.

I really don't think you could say that the majority of people in Bradford, or Yorkshire, or the UK for that matter are racist. There is a noisy, destructive element, but I don't see it as the norm.

You assume this kind of racism exists in lower-middle class Aussies-it actually doesnt-most lower middle class Aussies are far simpler-not quite cultured enough to even think in ethnic terms.
I couple of colorful comments dont change this.
Hence the Australian powers that be dont "oppose" racism much because it really isnt athreat(cronulla withstanding.
In europe there is a constant undercurrent of battle between liberal forces and a mass undercurrent of working class resentment and racism-hence these societies enforce political correctness more rigidly and adopt more overt anti-racist positions.

I don't see any of this in terms of class at all. I see it in terms of an insidious culture of intolerance that exists in all societies but is more prevalent in some than others. Or at least, expressed more overtly, and with greater licence in some that others.

Anyway, it's time for me to go home now, back on my melting pot of a train to my home in the racist hinterlands :D

And it is utter b*llocks to say that xenophobia and embedded hate doesn't exist in Australia!!!!! And what's more, you know it.

I actually dont know it-oh and I was born and raised in Oz as rather obviously ethnic. You ARE assuming regarding Australians.
Remember this, racism is built on resentment and ultimately unhappiness-happy people are rarely racist-and there are few happier groups than Australians-who think "they live in the best country on earth"-if you are that happy with your lot-and many Australians actually are, believe it or not, you are less inclined to hate.
In fact the guy who wrote hitchhikers visited Australia and commented he had never met a happier more contented bunch.

Resentment and misery are away of life for the European working class-and this makes them far more vulnerable to racism.
if you really think that the average Aussie making racist jokes at the barbie would actually take his racism to a more violent level you are wrong.

I don't care it's true.

During my last week at work in the bookies, I had a comment made to me by a pakistani man, which I can't repeat here as it is a bit colourful, but the gist of it was that I was a "white whore, who should get back to the kitchen where I belong" all because I wouldn't put his bet on as the race was nearly over.

That's just one example. But I have seen it quite a lot. From both sides

You should have responded with "Well, unlike you I am not a racist bigot and I think that a 'twat' is a 'twat' the world over....TWAT!!"

I did.

One good thing about working in the bookies, is that you can tell your customers to eff off. It's very liberating :D
