Mainly because we could and it's warmer than the UK (a lot) and has less crime than Southern Africa (a lot).

For me in particular, it is the 'perfect' blend between the two main countries where I have lived mostly. :)

I fancied the adventure, the travel by ship taking a month . . . and it cost only £10!!

I did the journey 3 times by ship and the trip itself was an incredible adventure.

As you say the trip itself was an incredible adventure, I became addicted :)

I travelled on 5 ships between England and Australia, twice via the Mediterranean, twice via South Africa, and once via Panama.

The Panama route took 5 weeks and was by far the best: via Melbourne, Sydney,
Wellington, Tahiti, Panama, Curacao, the Azores and through to Southampton.

And then planes took over which destroyed the adventure. :thumbdown:
