Re: Why did you do it?
because I wanted an adventure and it didn't cost us much as we did it on a 457.

Re: Why did you do it?
Because my husband's midlife crisis involved moving overseas instead of a sports car and younger woman. I'm still deciding on whether he should have opted for the cheap slut.

As for it being what we expected, having spent traveling on my own around some parts of Australia, along with a holiday with my husband to Sydney we knew what to expect on holiday but we also knew that living and working would be completely different to having a holiday here. We also knew that if long term it didn't work out we could always go back to the UK having experienced living and working in Australia. There would be no "what ifs" in our future in relation to Australia. We don't have kids so it was only the two of us (and the dog - think he would be very upset to go back to the uk now the sun-worshiper he is) to uproot, relocate and re-settle in Australia. We didnt have a choice on destination, that was determined by my husbands company (internal-company transfer) but I always had a soft spot for Sydney. |

We came out because Himself was offered a job. Simples. We're very happy, although admittedly we were very happy in the UK too. We're just happy people. :: snorts :: |

That was 6 years ago:D, didn't have any expectations really and this is my home now |

To answer the op, I got brought here as a kid. My expectations were low which was fortunate since I arrived to a stinking hot backwater with black and white tv and a blank look from shop-keepers when you asked for sweets. What more could you ask for? |

Re: Why did you do it?
I was 18 months old so had no say in the decision :D

Re: Why did you do it?
I didn't want to live near chris955. ;)
And I knocked an Aussie bird up on holiday in Europe. :o I had and try to have no expectations. |

Re: Why did you do it?
Mainly because we could and it's warmer than the UK (a lot) and has less crime than Southern Africa (a lot).
For me in particular, it is the 'perfect' blend between the two main countries where I have lived mostly. :) |

Re: Why did you do it?
Fancied a change. No different from the UK except I'm warmer.

Re: Why did you do it?

I travelled on 5 ships between England and Australia, twice via the Mediterranean, twice via South Africa, and once via Panama. The Panama route took 5 weeks and was by far the best: via Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington, Tahiti, Panama, Curacao, the Azores and through to Southampton. And then planes took over which destroyed the adventure. |

Re: Why did you do it?
I did it because the prospect of eking out a UK battlers existence scuttling from supermarket to supermarket and watching battlers on the Tv in the pissing rain was way too much to contemplate...
I did consider escaping to the country but I thought I would spend my days walking in to houses and saying 'lovely'! followed by 'nice asSPECT' when copping the view outside..... it was G who made me see the folly of my ways.... why should it be any different in Australia? : well it did not work out as above so maybe it is different..... |

It was an amazing trip, your Panama route sounds very similar to ours but included the West Indies.

To sail here? Definitely. Cost a fair bit and takes a few weeks but some have done it for their final move over as a 'celebration' type thing.

Someone did it a few years back as a way of encouraging their teenage daughter to agree to the move. Two weeks after docking, she'd made everyone so miserable they'd booked flights and gone home. Got back before their container got here. Now that was an expensive holiday!
She's worked out she could come on a cruise - it'd only take 5 weeks to get here and she'd have a full day in Sydney, but hey, at least she wouldn't have to fly :D |
Re: Why did you do it?
It seemed like a good idea at the time. Best opportunity of the moment. First 10 yrs were good, second 10 were ok and last 10 felt like Alcatraz - now, thankfully released on good behaviour.
