Oh for gawd sake!
Someone asks for advice on a windows pc problem, and all the mac heads come out of the woodwork. Buy a mac! Everything will be better! You won't get pop ups! No annoying malware that will try and hijack your browsing experience! No spam in your email!
Its kinda like the Johovahs witness'.
Yes, I think Apple are nice computers. I can't stand their advocates though.
Please when someone has a problem with a windows PC, don't just say "Buy a Mac".

And you just said it yourself. "You won't get pop ups! No annoying malware that will try and hijack your browsing experience! No spam in your email!"
So why would anyone not advocate a computer and operating system that actually works the way its meant to when somebody asks for advice on what to buy.

What's worse than you posting this, was the fact that I just bothered to translate it...

New computer ?
Start here http://www.apple.com/uk/
Quite simply they work. No viruses, no bloatware, no slowing down, no crashing and works straight out of the box.
You'll never look back.

You know, the last time I bought a new PC, I pulled it out of the box and it just didn't work. Weird huh? Not to mention mine slows down and crashes aaaaaaaall the time. Viruses? Sheesh I'm just overrun with them.
Anyway, I've got to go. I saw an ad on the telly for something really shiny just now so I've got to go out and buy one right away.

If your PC is completely screwed then perhaps its time for a rebuild...
back-up any essential data (photos, documents, TV shows you havent watched yet etc etc ) to DVD then re-install the operating system from scratch. Most windows boxes need this doing every 6 months or so to keep them running smoothly (more often if you install lots of crap, less often if you're really careful about what you run).
If you really do need a new PC (and chances are you DONT - unless you're playing games, doing 3D CAD work or transcoding HD videos regularly your current machine is probably more than good enough for the task at hand) - Then consider trying to find one with Windows XP on rather than Vista. Vista is claimed to be very secure and better at preventing malicious attacks - but those unfortunate enough to use Vista realise that in fact vista *IS* as malicious attack! You need vast amounts of memory to run the OS, it runs much slower than XP and lots of hardware has compatibility issues.
(..and I'm not going to get into the whole MS/Apple/Linux debate - they each have their plusses and minuses, none are perfect but none are without ANY merit either..)
Many of my colleagues who've bought machines recently have paid EXTRA to get the 'downgrade option' and have XP instead of vista!!...

I run Vista and I can see no slowness in it at all. You could level that accusation (and it is just an accusation) at it before SP1 came along but not now. Vista works perfectly well "out of the box". I run Vista on 2GB of RAM with no slowness at all. And let's face it... how cheap is RAM these days anyway?
Yes it is typical of Mac fan-boys to rant on about how fantastic their pretty boxes are but come on... it's just a computer. You don't see Windows users claiming how their life revolves around their computers. You have to ask them what's in it for them when they cream over their pretty keyboards. They can't all be mates with Mr Jobs.
There is nothing a Mac can do that Vista can't do equally or if not, certainly better. If you don't know how to use Vista, ask someone who does. It's really not that hard to use.
My advice - get Vista it's perfectly safe to do so. Secondary advice - Have a play on a Mac. If you like it, buy it. They're just computers.

Computers are complicated to keep people like me in a job
If the machine is absolutley gone...First wipe it and try again. you should have installation disks that came with it? Alternatively get someone to download Ubuntu for you. Start with a fresh OS install. See if you can use it...before you go out and buy something new for the sake of it.

And now to upset all the fanboi's
MAC O/S is technically the least secure due to the number of exploits per user and the length of average time it spends for Apple to patch and fix said problems. It is overpriced bit of glittery tat that can not be upgradedd to move with the times but has to be replaced when things go wrong.
Windows is the most attached OS and Vista seems to be in a right mess (I only got ours to run usefully by disabling most of it). however the world uses Windows so everything works on Windows (for a given level of works)
Linux will work for most things but the obvious thing that you need it to do it will not or will not do it the way you need it to. You will then spend too long in a dark room trying to work out which @^$()@^$) file you need to edit to get the thing working. once it is running there are not too many problems.
Right that should have upset everyone

As an IT engineer most computer problems are caused by the interface between the chair and the keyboard.

You B***ard. That really upset me!

Your last sentence is 100% correct. People should learn how to use the OS before complaining that it's s**t or "doesn't work".

computers are not complicated. Perhaps some of the functions they perform are.
Computers are logical devices, they do what you tell them to do.
As a previous poster said, the overwhelming majority of issues that crop up on home PCs are caused by what is between the keyboard and the chair.

- Don't install something you dont trust.
- Don't open attachments from unknown senders (be wary if they are from a known sender)
- Don't wildly click things if it is not responding

Is the superiority complex an optional extra?

And I think the superiority complex is actually more a normal complex observed by someone with an inferiority complex

Seriously tho, PCs and Macs have a place in the world. Both are good at entirely different things and have weaknesses.
