2 tips.....

Never install things suggested to you as pop ups - unless you want grief (or know how to fix problems)

And buy a Mac. A bit more than a PC but comes with everything you ned out of the box and just works,

New computer ?

Start here http://www.apple.com/uk/

Quite simply they work. No viruses, no bloatware, no slowing down, no crashing and works straight out of the box.

No I answered I direct question. "What spec should I be looking for ?". Or does your windows computer crash before you can read more than a couple of posts further on ? :p

And you just said it yourself. "You won't get pop ups! No annoying malware that will try and hijack your browsing experience! No spam in your email!"

So why would anyone not advocate a computer and operating system that actually works the way its meant to when somebody asks for advice on what to buy.

Is the superiority complex an optional extra?

You know, the last time I bought a new PC, I pulled it out of the box and it just didn't work. Weird huh? Not to mention mine slows down and crashes aaaaaaaall the time. Viruses? Sheesh I'm just overrun with them.

Re: why are computers so complicated??

If your PC is completely screwed then perhaps its time for a rebuild...

back-up any essential data (photos, documents, TV shows you havent watched yet etc etc ) to DVD then re-install the operating system from scratch. Most windows boxes need this doing every 6 months or so to keep them running smoothly (more often if you install lots of crap, less often if you're really careful about what you run).

If you really do need a new PC (and chances are you DONT - unless you're playing games, doing 3D CAD work or transcoding HD videos regularly your current machine is probably more than good enough for the task at hand) - Then consider trying to find one with Windows XP on rather than Vista. Vista is claimed to be very secure and better at preventing malicious attacks - but those unfortunate enough to use Vista realise that in fact vista *IS* as malicious attack! You need vast amounts of memory to run the OS, it runs much slower than XP and lots of hardware has compatibility issues.

(..and I'm not going to get into the whole MS/Apple/Linux debate - they each have their plusses and minuses, none are perfect but none are without ANY merit either..)

Many of my colleagues who've bought machines recently have paid EXTRA to get the 'downgrade option' and have XP instead of vista!!...

I run Vista and I can see no slowness in it at all. You could level that accusation (and it is just an accusation) at it before SP1 came along but not now. Vista works perfectly well "out of the box". I run Vista on 2GB of RAM with no slowness at all. And let's face it... how cheap is RAM these days anyway?

Yes it is typical of Mac fan-boys to rant on about how fantastic their pretty boxes are but come on... it's just a computer. You don't see Windows users claiming how their life revolves around their computers. You have to ask them what's in it for them when they cream over their pretty keyboards. They can't all be mates with Mr Jobs.

There is nothing a Mac can do that Vista can't do equally or if not, certainly better. If you don't know how to use Vista, ask someone who does. It's really not that hard to use.

My advice - get Vista it's perfectly safe to do so. Secondary advice - Have a play on a Mac. If you like it, buy it. They're just computers.

Computers are complicated to keep people like me in a job

If the machine is absolutley gone...First wipe it and try again. you should have installation disks that came with it? Alternatively get someone to download Ubuntu for you. Start with a fresh OS install. See if you can use it...before you go out and buy something new for the sake of it.

And now to upset all the fanboi's

MAC O/S is technically the least secure due to the number of exploits per user and the length of average time it spends for Apple to patch and fix said problems. It is overpriced bit of glittery tat that can not be upgradedd to move with the times but has to be replaced when things go wrong.

Windows is the most attached OS and Vista seems to be in a right mess (I only got ours to run usefully by disabling most of it). however the world uses Windows so everything works on Windows (for a given level of works)

Linux will work for most things but the obvious thing that you need it to do it will not or will not do it the way you need it to. You will then spend too long in a dark room trying to work out which @^$()@^$) file you need to edit to get the thing working. once it is running there are not too many problems.

Right that should have upset everyone :p

Re: why are computers so complicated??

computers are not complicated. Perhaps some of the functions they perform are.

Computers are logical devices, they do what you tell them to do.

As a previous poster said, the overwhelming majority of issues that crop up on home PCs are caused by what is between the keyboard and the chair.
  1. Don't install something you dont trust.
  2. Don't open attachments from unknown senders (be wary if they are from a known sender)
  3. Don't wildly click things if it is not responding

In these politically correct times, it's almost as if people are afraid of criticizing the Apple community because it is a "minority". Good on you Graz79.

Blimey! All a bit passionate!

My tuppence worth.... I have been a PC user for years and years (yes I remember edlin). I;ve dabbled in programaming and some higher end user stuff (not developer) and am very comfortable with it and recognize its worth - its here to stay and thats fine.

However, I have recently dipped my toes into Mac and for the uses I want I am very happy with it - happier than I have ever been with Windows out of the box. And thats nothing to do with style or design. Its takes a bit of getting used (Leopard in my case) but there are enough similarities to make it pretty much intuitive.

I think the pluses are is doesnt suffer from malware and popups and the like that Windows does. For non techy people I think its simplicity is a real advantge. Of course there are apps which wont run on Mac but on whole for most users I doubt this to be an issue. Nearly everyting the avergae home user wants to do they can, without the threat of problems for the unitiated. Some recent surveys show its hackability (using Safari) to be easier than anything else but while this I take to be true - how often does it happen?

Its not superiority complex, I dont think Macs are "better" per se but I do think they warrant consideration when buying new - especially for home use. For work, its Windows for me.

I'm relatively new to Mac but for my home use, I recommend it.
Maybe one day I'll try Linux and think again, but until then.....

I've used all three in my time, Macs, Unix (linux) and Windows. I like Unix (Linux) and Windows for the sheer customisibility of them.

Macs I'm sure are very good still, though I haven't used one since Tiger I think.

Oh the popup thing is solved in windows too now. Even IE has a popup blocker. Spam is a universal problem, not solved by having a Mac.

My main gripe about Mac Heads was it was a PC user telling his problem and people saying "Buy a Mac". What kind of reaction do you expect if a user says "my Holdens broken down" and you say, "Buy a Ford".

sounds most definite like an Error 17.

and yes, I would say buy a mac too. 22" iMac will do you fine.

However, to convert to Mac then it will take time and patience to learn a new operating system.

Or, you could stay with a PC. I'm not impressed with Vista, our IT dept seem to be taking ages to get it ready for role out over our network.

The biggest problem with windows based PCs is the shear amount of crap you can instal on it and not realize.

What I done with out home computer, was set all other users (wife and kids), as limited accounts, so the could not install/uninstall reconfigure anything. And it's been running for years now. The only time it has needed the operating system rebuilt was for a hard drive failure and and other was me messing about with it. How ever, it is being replaced with 24" iMac when the time comes.

Yes appreciate that but as myself and another who promoted Mac pointed out, in post#4 the OP did ask for advice on a new computer hence opening the door.

Regarding the customisability aspect, yes so far (with Mac) this seems to be true, but I haven't felt the need to customise as it does everything (look, feel, actions etc) pretty much how I want by default.

Thats the point I was trying to make albeit less eloquently. If you are techie its less of an issue (as you can recover it or not do it in the first place)

My advice to help the OP would be:
-Do you have any techie friends who know how to reinstall windows (xp or vista)? It's not that hard.
-Do you know any techie friends who can set you up with ubuntu linux? As this is what you will really enjoy, it's so clean, fast and user-friendly.
If neither of the above apply then you have the choice of learning to love technology (or at least spend many hours in front of the monitor) or get yourself a new machine (anything but vista if you plan to actually own it.)

Had to happen...:(

You get the Mac Heads and then the Linux guys come out.

So ubuntu is so user friendly it opens Word 2007 documents? May not be a big deal now, but wait, in two years time he will be wondering why his user-friendly Linux PC can't do the usual stuff that eveyone elses PC can.

I tried Suse linux on this pc as a dual boot for a few months. Got everything I wanted set up on it, just wasn't very impressed. And installing packages was a pain in the arse.

But hey, if you're a Linux fanboi, who are we to argue. Go ahead and tell a non technical person to get a OS designed by techies for techies.
