This would be another moral victory to England if they can take this one, on top of the great escape of Cardiff

Agreed. I predict that England will win this one easily, then take two more wins to seal the Ashes.

personally, I think one more would be enough, but I'd be happy to take another win on top of that

Totally agree. He followed some great Aussie captains - Border (especially), Taylor, Waugh but is not as good as any of them. He is an average captain in charge of , a now, average team.

Was that a legit catch (Strauses)? Looked a bit dodge to me. First time I've ever agreed with Shane Warne.

This has always puzzled me:-

Why do they say the wickets first and then the runs e.g. 0/100 in Oz, but the rest of the world (I think) say it as 100/0?

Definitely a question mark over that catch, but the umpire's decision is final. In any case, it's academic; England are playing like Australians right now, while the Australians are playing like Poms. Why? That's the bigger question!

No idea. Seems more logical to say (out) for (runs) to me, though.

Plenty of opportunity for England to snatch a defeat from the jaws of victory on this one...

gonna be a nail biting evening tonight I can tell!

200ish runs or 5 more (tail end) wickets? could go either way but I suppose a result one way or the other is pretty much guaranteed unless it pisses down all day!

Perhaps not quite as good as Allan Border. But now I find myself thinking was/is Ponting just a mediocre captain who had some outstanding players? Now that the greats are no longer around in the Australian team they seem at the moment to be a pretty 'average' bunch. But l'm trying not to judge to harshly just yet. Its only the second test before we all get too excited. We know that they have the killer instinct and the capacity to hit back. The ashes are not over yet.

I rest my case....

England got lucky with some dodgy umpire calls. I'd be very interested to know what the score would have looked like if three of our openers hadn't been unfairly dismissed. Though to be fair, our batting was quite poor anyway.

Now we're relying on a partnership between moderate batsman and a wicketkeeper to keep our score alive! Crazy times. One more wicket down and the rest will crumble, I think.

England to win by at least 100.

One thing you can pretty much guarantee is that the Aussies will fight to the death. We have seen it time and time again and this test reminds me a lot of Edgbaston right now. We made a similar first innings score and completely outplayed them for the first 4 days, yet on the last day they took it away from us and nearly took victory. One thing is for sure, it's gonna be tight now. Whenever Johnson comes in he will no longer be coming in to occupy the crease and kill time, he will be doing what he loves best, smashing the ball around to try and win. Very dangerous situation for England here!

Agreed.

The Beeb's TMS commentary has swung from this...

75 years since England last beat Australia in a Test at Lord's... Lovely piece of bowling from Swannage, setting North up with the looper and then spearing it in. Cheers from the crowd as the giant screen shows Ricky Ponting with his head on his chest on the visitor's balcony.
...to this:

See you for Nervous Monday on the morrow...
I think Australia is gradually regaining the psychological advantage.

I only watched until Tea and I must say Clarke batted superbly. He came out with real purpose and showed that he was only going after one thing; Victory. Full credit to him as I don't think many batsmen in the world would have come out like that

I agree, I still think Australia will lose. One of these two will probably fall early on and then, in reality, it's game over.

Johnson will love being given a target and chance to redeem himself though. But in general, yes I agree with you that it is likely to be out of their reach if he has to chase anything more than 150.

I was convinced at start of play yesterday that as long as we got Katich and Ponting early (the two most capable of occupying the crease for a long period of time) then it would be inevitable, but the middle order is proving to be more resistant than I once thought

Well if the Ozzies get over the line on this one all i can say is fair play to them as that would probably go down as one of the greatest wins in test history, Two tests and both have been exciting and dramatic, lots of drama, looks like its shaping up to a repeat of 2005. Its going to be a fun night, its never been easy being an english cricket fan, especialy against the aussies, its a shame England havnt been more competative when the ashes are played down here.
