That's you as an individual. The aim of the human race (or any species) is to procreate. I don't think there is a purpose of life but as we find ourselves here we aim to continue the phenomenon, as a whole. I'm afraid I haven't made a personal contribution either.

Your right! Its all very confusing for us. Here we are a non-believing, catholic Englishman married to an lapsed Iranian, non-believing muslim both living in Australia sending one of their children to a catholic school. But what makes me even more confused is this..... If his school really IS a catholic school then how come he comes home and ask's 'what is the meaning of life mum?' Bloody hell, thats the most un-catholic question you could ask. The whole point behind faith schools is to indoctrinate at an early age the need to accept all the crap they throw at you without engaging the ol' thought process. So having come home from a long days slog I am taking the morning off tomorrow and going down to find out whats going on. How dare they teach him to think! I'm going to report them to the pope if theres anymore of this.

BTW I put him straight... it is 42.

Cheers

Chris

I told him I'll have answer for him when I pick him, so all helps would be appreciated.

I thought about it I really dont know, strange questions children ask their parents, he said he asked his teacher yesterday & she didnt know either.
Life is what you make it. Life means whatever you want it to mean.

Tell your son it's all a lot easier when you become an existentialist.

That's the exact position we're in.

The answer is for the good education and discipline

If only you knew just what went on in them schools. I could open your eyes. Having a father who went to Artane School it's not very nice to be-little those who went.

On the subject of Catholic schools. My step daughter went to a catholic primary school and of course did her confirmation after weeks of instruction and filling in books etc. Anyway, at easter there was a religious advert on tv and Jesus was carrying the cross. Step daughter turned to me and said, "I don't know what that is he's carrying but it looks really heavy"
The meaning of life...to Love (IMO). Everyone has a different purpose for being here no two of us the same. And no I'm not religious at all or a bible basher. I do believe tho that we don't go through everything that we do for nothing.(IMO)

Not sure if it was be-littling as such, more a tongue in cheek generalisation. Lots of schools, organisations, clubs have skeletons in their cupboards.

Life means providing a way for DNA to replicate itself; this is the only constant among all forms of life whether it be animal, vegetable, bacteria or a virus. "The selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins explains it really well but for children an adult would have to read it first then explain the basics to them expanding it as they grow up. Most children can understand quite advanced concepts if given the chance and a bit of encouragement.

Well it's not about economics or tax cuts or petrol prices. But with 6 billion people on the planet I'd hazard a guess that how we treat each other has something to do with it!

BTW for your son's interest: If we could travel at the speed of light (300,000km per sec); it would take us 90,000 years to cross our galaxy. There are over a billion galaxies in our universe; and it is now thought that other universes exist.

With those odds, I really do think WE ARE NOT ALONE !!!
