Lamingtons

I was going to mention the 8 hour working day and granting adult women the right to vote, but I'm afraid New Zealand beat us to it by a fair bit.

Ah yes... the wonder of cake rolled in chocolate and coconut. A really good Lamington is hard to find imo... but when you get one... yum!

Australia is also famous for hot weather which can make Lamingtons melt. Australia should change its weather. Save the Lamington.

Australia it appears is now famous for being very very expensive.

Just been in NZ and USA. Quite seriously we never heard the word Australia once without the ' expensive ' word being attached in the same sentence. Odd thing was many like cab drivers had never been to OZ, but the reputation just seems to have spread like wildfire.

Passed through NZ on way over, it almost makes australia look reasonable Eye watering, amazingly expensive and we are used to OZ prices. Tourists there must need smelling salts prior to shopping. How the heck do people survive there.

Only by 1 year as South Australia gave women the vote in 1894. Additionally South Australia was the first to allow women to run for political office as it was done at the same time in 1894. NZ in 1893 only gave women the right to vote, not to run for political office.

Oh trust me, I get quite vocal at times about my dislikes. I'll often discuss differences between the UK and Aus at work, as I now work with some very well travelled Aussies, and some of them are as frustrated with some stuff here as I am.Since I came here I've always played by the rule that I want to be myself, not pretend to love somewhere/something if I don't - and in some cases I've got a lot of respect for it!

If I was as vocal "out there" as I am "on here" I'm sure I'd end up in strife!

I don't pretend to love things I don't, but I do tend to bite my tongue at times. Maybe you're (a lot) more diplomatic that I am Polly. (Actually I'm sure you are!) Well done you.

China's per-capita CO2 may be quite small (don't know) but their overall CO2 output is ginormous. That's what counts

Me

Garnaut is a socialist with his own left-wing, anti-west agenda, but it matters not. We can both post links to plenty of pro/anti-MMGW 'experts' and opinions/theories. I prefer to read up for myself and draw my own conclusions

When it comes to the pseudo-science of MMGW, per-capita means nothing. Brunei has a population of about 420 000 and has higher per-capita CO2 emissions than Australia (as in your link), therefore, according to you, they are having a bigger impact on MMGW than Australia. But they are not - China, India, USA are having a much bigger impact as per-capita measurements are pointless

Anyway, all this is conjecture as MMGW from CO2 emissions is not happening

China would pick up the slack - and some more within 6 months.

But of course Americans will think that Australia is more expensive now - the exchange rate will have a load to do with that. Especially if they did their travelling (or know people who travelled here) when the dollars were at parity.

Same as the Brits in front of us at Taronga Zoo last year, moaning about how much more expensive everything was than when they were last there (when the exchange rate was 2.4 to the pound rather than the 1.5ish it was at the time)
