Ive been accused of lying about my qualifications, or as I am descriptive if I am writing about what has happened, been accused of making it up.

I have worked as a HCA in various hospitals, worked with greyhounds, supermarket, Pet shop, worked for British Rail, done film extra work, did a years Journo course, trained as a registered vet nurse, not long finished a cert IV in doco film making, worked in oil/gas, basically havent got to my mid 40s without a few different careers, oh yes, started training to be a human nurse but left when Mum was sick.

I describe events in detail, often more detail than people care to notice and basically dont give a flying **** now if they believe me.

I am friends with many people from this site, that I have met in person and many that I havent met but have chatted to over the years and become close to and are still in contact with.

Oh incidentally, I can put up with the fabrication of someones story far easier than I can some of the bitching that goes on.

OMG, you mean people dont tell the truth on an internet forum? Bah, what have I been missing. Sadly, I am a WYSIWYG kinda gal with no creativity whatsoever. I've met plenty of BS artists in my time though - just put that down to age.

Why the hell you're ironing I don't know. I haven't ironed in years. Shake violently when out of machine, hang up and take down shake and fold neatly. Put away and forget until found once again screwed up on child's floor.

Read some of the obituaries in the Telegraph to see what i mean. Or even here in Australia.

Take Malcolm Van Gelder for instance. Look at what this guy did in his lifetime:
  • 1952 Royal Military College middleweight boxing champion.
  • 1958 Became a the ACT’s first Wallaby, scored 2 tries against NZ
  • Played rugby for 4 states – SA, Vic, NSW and ACT
  • Refereed 466 rugby matches in the ACT
  • Scored a try against the All Blacks
  • A graduate in Military Science, Engineering, Economics and Law
  • Fought in the Borneo campaign (Sawrawak during the Indonesian confrontation)
  • Fought in the Malaya Campaign against the communists
  • Fought in the Vietnam War.
  • Spent 2 years in Thailand as an Army Engineer
  • Was at Maralinga for the atomic bomb trials.
  • Retired from the Army as a Lt Colonel
  • Won two AMF Gold Medals for military essays
  • Was a cattle farmer and built a small ‘alternative life-style’ village
  • Was a Solicitor with a small but successful practice.
  • Partied with Russian Generals in Delhi at the time of their Afghanistan War
  • Travelled up the Ganges on a steam ship.
  • Travelled to Katmandu

http://malcolmvangelder.blogspot.com.au/

Or you can read all about him building airfields in Thailand here:

http://www.wasappers.com/documents/D..._Chapter_4.pdf

He packed a fair bit into his life. I goes some might think he was a Walter Mitty if they "met" him on BE. To be honest BE would benefit from a few more like Col Van Gelder.....
Sounds like an interesting man.

Some people have had good lives is all I can say. We seem to live in a society whereby people resent those who have had chances they have not - and whereby the ordinary is commonplace. It's people like him who make our society and history interesting.

It's also worth bearing in mind that a man like this is beyond the reach of the many. They just wouldn't comprehend that sort of person.

Just wanted to pick you up there - hasn't everyone visited Katmandu?.....

How very true this is.

The trouble is, for every wonderfully interesting life that is lead, there are also, often, some whopping great hassles that have been endured. And that's what the resenters never understand.

These days I'm living the suburban dream (hanging out to escape to the country) but before settling down I'd already lived an amazingly non-normal life, with wonderful and terrible experiences. I'd do a list but people would label me a fantasist.

We're all worried, are we.

It's funny you should say that - but you have nothing to fear..I suspect G has me in mind lol..and indeed, Hebe might implicate me. (I live in Melbourne)...however I take solace in the fact I have been to 1 BE meet a long time ago - I hate to count the years - and have never talked about my life. If someone takes a disliking to me based on the briefest of conversations I actually take it as a compliment, (if I can be mean for a sec).

You make a very good point. The only reason I point to formative experiences in my life (at great risk!) is because migration has made me realise that these experiences made me a good candidate and that I have benefitted as a result. It's also why I point to mediocrity as sometimes being an indicator for trouble ahead for a migrant. The resenters don't need to know about daily troubles - we all deal with life. It's how we deal with them that counts : (I give you Slappy's man, and indeed Slappy himself).

I live in a semi-rural location, and even that still gives me a lot to do. Oh yes!

Actually, no, I wasn't worried at all... just agreeing that some people have big jam-packed lives and others don't.

Some do, then they stop.

Some don't and then they do.

Badge, did you just out yourself as a suspect in the maker-upper case?

It's how you deal with them though without, perhaps, resorting to mediocrity. There comes a tipping point, I think, when people slow down and remember more than they do...in some ways, I am as busy as ever, when I consider the diversity of what I do, if not the intensity...

I reckon it's sensible to stop after awhile before burn out or to idle back a bit.

Your point still resonates with me:

I've just put down the Australian. In there is the usual round up of Anzac stories.

The reality is that they don't seem to make them like that anymore, (apart from serving soldiers of course and service workers).

I work in an office, and in a city. I look at my fellow workers with their Iphones and suburban lifestyles and I really wonder what they would make of men like the academic Bage who in the words of the paper' walked with Mawson in the Antarctic, 'and was felled at Gallipoli' knowingly walking to his death.

That was the idea. I have admitted to changing very subtle details on these pages due to it being a public forum but often trying very hard to keep the flavour of the original....infact I've been reduced to a sweat in finding the balance...and occasionally given up!
