Visa Changes

Anybody seen the news about the major changes to the visa process. 20,000 are going to be kicked off the current waiting list and handed their money back.

Those hairdressing and cook courses, as routes to PR, seem to have finally got up the noses of enough ministers for them to put a stop to it.

Yes. There are a couple of threads about it in the immigration bit. I think there are quite a few upset people around.

and for some they probably have good reason to be.... but the process had come in for some stick from all corners and really did seem a bit bizarre at times. According to one Minister today, there are currently 12,000 cooks in the system waiting to be processed !

Local paper running story on business couple who bought business now cant stay..

About time too (although I'm sure it's going to upset a few people). I never understood why it was allowed to go on for as long as it did.

Cant understand why they are encouraging teachers to come though, it's nigh on impossible for teachers to get permanent jobs these days and a whole load of new graduates may never get one.

Re: Visa Changes

many people on temporary visas who plan to get pr are hoping and praying their jobs are on the new sol which comes out on April the 30th
If they aren't it could be devastating

Re: Visa Changes

The 20,000 having applications cancelled are pre-September 2007 applicants, nothing to do with cooks or hairdressers. There is nothing official about what specific occupations might be effected one way or another as far as I can see, just speculation.

I have only seen on BE that teachers are to be prioritised, but it is definitely not official. Also seen posts about cooks, hairdressers and accountants coming off the skills list but that is also not official yet. It does need to be addressed IMHO and I think it will be for cooks and hairdressers at least. The criteria for accountants is an absolute joke, it must be the easiest skills assessment out there, you don't even need to be an accountant.

A lot of panic on immigration forum, some of it justified and some of it because people haven't actually read the announcements,
