Personal opinion, plus experience of booking lord knows how many flights for people over the last four years. The bosses fight tooth and nail not to have to go Virgin
Have you looked at different times for flights? How flexible are you?

Frequent flyer points and status may have something to do with that. My only issue with QANTAS domestic is they are consistently late.

Virgin blue are OK.
If there is much of a price difference I would go with the cheaper one.
Just make sure you know what you have to pay for in advance....and be prepared

No free booze on Qantas domestic flights either, unless you are travelling business class or on the Canberra flight where they provide free beer because most of the users are business passengers and demand it!

Bernie, be aware that if you go QANTAS you will have a very good chance of flying a very old 767-300 (used to do the BNE to HK run) with no seat back TV's and very little comfort etc. We did this trip at the back end of last year and went over with VB and back QANTAS I would say the VB leg was the better. The money we saved on the ticket bought us a few drinks when we needed them. VB also had seat back TV's there were a few free channels but you had to pay for films/sport. We got free food/drink with QANTAS on the way back (I think its free if you fly after 4 or 5pm or something like that).

We've travelled a few times with Virgin Blue. Never had any problems, good service, clean planes, pleasant staff. Would be more than happy to use them again - they're a low cost airline, it's not going to be first class in Singapore

Filthy? SHi*? Expensive !!!
Where have you lot been????
When I moved to Australia in 1999 you could fly Melbourne to Syd with Qantas for $499 or Maybe Ansett for £399 in a sale. You can do it thesedays for £150, 9 years later...
And as for Virgin being dirty and expensive, you obviously havent flown Ryan Air or Easy jet over iN Europe.
Quit ya moaning, you dont realise how good you have it..

What it costs ten years ago is not irrelevant. With everything else going up constantly, taxes, bills, etc it is nice to have a situation when something goes the other way for a change.
And the service level is the same, but I understand your point. Anyway everyone is entitled to an opinion.
I just cant see how anyone in this day and age can complain about the "cost" of budget airlines.

It was in force last year when I flew with Qantas in economy, free drinks after a certain time.
I think airline choice is a very personal thing, after spending years of reading thread like this.
Some of us will fly with a select few airlines, some will fly with whoever is cheapest, some don't care how long the trip takes, some want the quickest route, some won't fly with dry airlines, some won't fly with airlines from certain countries or areas of the world for their own reasons.
I'm fussy, and I freely admit it - I really enjoy the flight between Aus and the UK (I know, I'm weird!) and in order to enjoy it I want to know who I'm flying with, the airport I'm going through etc. Same with domestic flights, I go Qantas cos I use the Lounges, I travel in the afternoon when I can so I can have a drink or two and relax. I don't want the hassle of booking luggage in advance, and as a frequent reader of aircraft incident reports I know just how common a lot of problems Qantas have experienced with their aircraft really are.
Did anyone else read the reports which suggest the most likely cause of the 2 aircraft dropping several thousand feet over northerrn WA recently? Believed to be caused by signals from a nearby military installation.
