Vasectomy
#46
Yeah, but it is whether I will let anyone near me to take a sample.....believe me, if it is too sore for me, it could be Raquel Welsh in her heyday or Halle Berry, and I would still be saying "sorry luv, it's just not your lucky day!!"

My OH has finally agreed to go in for it, and we had to go to the local GP to get a referral let, and she suggested the Marie Stopes clinic over here as she said it's what they do all day long so are good at it, but we've been quoted $496 out of pocket after the medicare rebate!!!!!!! Have it done in the U.K. mate, it's free!!!!! I'm sure someone somewhere will be willing to test your samples...!!!!

From what I gather, the Doctors around here who do vasectomies specialise in them all the time. I think that my one mentioned he had done over 50,000 of them, but he retired last year. I think I was one of the last.
Maries Stopes do state:
The cost of a vasectomy varies depending on which State you live in

In this area I was given the idea of the cost being under $100 after rebate.
However, I have checked a couple of other sites recently, and around the $400-$500 after rebate appears common, down in Sydney. ($700 less $240 rebate is being quoted by some)
I was wondering if my rebate was higher due to the Medicare Safety Net, but I didn't think I reached it that year, and the doctor wouldn't have known anyway. Maybe the rebate has changed since early 2007.
I think the answer might involve bulk billing...
My Doctor bulk billed the initial consultation, normally quoted at $100.
Maybe part of the rest of the procedure was bulk billed aswell ?
I have just seen someone, on another forum, say that they had it done fully bulk billed, but they know of others who paid about $300-$400 before the rebate.
The cost obviously varies a lot.

My hubby has had the op TWICE!!!!
No kidding.
First time the dog jumped on him the day after the op and it got infected!!!!
6 months later he still hasn't had the all clear from the hospital!!
So off he goes for vasectomy number 2!!! The doctor who did the original op holds up a jar and shows him his tubes that they cut out previously!!
Glad to say it worked the second time around

A friend of mine had it done twice too. First time they couldn't cut through one of the tubes - tried for 45 mins. Next time they got through but found it was solid not hollow. Sent for tests and found out on that side he had no kidney
Better to know I guess than not but still... Obviously had always been a single barrel not the double bore he'd always assumed he was

Hey,my OH had it done this year and he whinged for a couple of days and had a bit of soreness for a week and that was it. Nothing compared to pregnancy and childbirth.
In NZ it is free for a woman to be sterilised but $500 + for a vasectomy. However, in discussing it with our GP we discovered that each year GPs are given free vouchers to distribute as they see fit, and as we are in our 40s with 4 kids we qualified. Yay! It's worth asking.
