I'm dreading going to the US on my Aussie passport. The fascist border thugs have a hard time getting their heads around dual nationality plus I was refused a tourist visa way back in the day which I'll have to declare.

Even if I'm really polite I think there's a good chance I'll get handcuffed and taken away for a few hours.

Yeah, far too many cultural differences at play there - having border guards that don't understand the concept of more than 2 weeks holiday being one of them. I particularly dislike the grilling you get when you are transiting through a US airport. You don't even want to visit the country, just be on your way to the next destination, but are still subject to the whimsy of the border thug.

I assume that your visa refusal will still flag on your new Aus passport, and not the passport the refusal was issued on? Assuming they were both different.

Not sure but I'll not take any chances, I'll declare it. It was many years ago, after graduating from college I turned up at the Embassy with long hair and a leather jacket and applied for a tourist visa and was rejected.

I wrote a letter of appeal with a copy of my bank statement and all was OK in the end.

Fair enough. probably not worth running the risk.

I'd love to still have a valid UK passport. however feeding the family is more important to me than having 8 valid passports when the four we have will suffice. If I ever win a serious amount of money on Lotto, it will be one of the first things I spend money on.

I'm just happy to hear that we dont need a valid UK passport to get into England, we will renew them when we get back. A shame we have to get the kids UK passports before we go, that would save us some money.

Pretty much my point earlier. I have better things to do with $1200 than get four UK passports, when I have to have an Australian set anyway.

Just make sure you can prove that you are British, otherwise without an onwards ticket you mightn't get on the plane and/or through the UK border with your 6 month stamp. I'm not sure that your place of birth (e.g. in Aus passport) would suffice.

Why do you need to get them here? If they have Aussie ones you don't have to say you're moving back permanently, just tell passport control you're on holiday, use their Aussie ones then sort UK ones out when you've arrived. Not worth spending excess money if you don't have to.

Not necessary is it? My wife travelled (alone) on a Australian passport, place of birth 'Philippines', no return ticket and had no trouble at all at the border getting into the UK.
