Front loader every day. Top loaders stretch your clothes and use more water and IMO don't wash as well. Also I am only 5ft with short arms and I can't reach into the bottom of them. Thankfully I have a massive arse otherwise I am sure I would have toppled into the one I had when I first moved here!
Nothing wrong with a fat arse NB at least you always have somewhere comfy to sit

Our UK front loader died a month or so ago, we bought another front loader (was miffed though as they literally just changed the rules so that it has to be 4 stars to get the rebate
)
Even though top loaders are cheaper to buy they use more water, plus if you want to put some work surface in your laundry it's impossible with a top loader as you need the access....

Always had a top loader in my family but since coming to the UK it's always been a front loader. Now my whites don't stay white here
I am sure it's not the machine, but my washing was always better in a top loader - towels softer and such... then again the water is harder here and there is never places for me to outside line dry when living in flats.....anyhoo
Probably go for a front loader in Oz due to the water issues and energy ratings but my hear will always be with top loaders!

Front loader as a sop to DH's green preferences. Higher energy ratings and water conservation. I think it is less harsh on the clothes than our old Hoover top loader and the fact that it is smaller is also a plus. It does a good job with cleaning the clothes and they arent as "stressed" in the process.

Thanks folks. My suspicions are confirmed - front loaders are the biz.

i have a top loader i only pd $100 for it its 6kilos of washing which is big enough for me to do quite a bit of washing in one go being a dirty family of 4 then that helps
when this one dies then i am going back to front loader again but at the mo i am quite happy with my big bird

I remember the thing I did really like about the top loader is the ability to setting it on different levels (ie 1/3 full wash, 1/2 full) so this was better for doing the small loads for all the underwear and not wasting a whole tub for the few things.
You could also separate out those funny black and white items that don't fall into the light/dark category!
I don't have that option on the front loader and (not sure if just the UK machines) but, man, the front loaders take AGES. In NZ/OZ I remember it only used to take 45 minutes, but here the minimum is 1hr 15min or longer (even on economy).

I paid $399 for a great front loader lasy m onth in KMart. With the $200 rebate from the government it will cost me about £100!!! Not worth bringing one over unless its pretty new I would say.... But I think that about everything here. I havent found much dearer than the UK at all, and you havent got to wait 3 b***dy months for it!!!!

Was just going to post that myself - my friend bought a Samsung 7kg washer for $399 and got the $200 rebate too. I think that's a really good bargain

sorry if this is a dumb question....
if you are 5 in the family, does that mean you have to get a big front loader...the ones that handle more Kilos?
thanks

You can get rebates on a newly purchased washing machine providing it's water efficient. In SA the washing machine has to have at least a 4 star water efficiency rating and you can then claim back up to $200. The amounts may be different in other states though so check the relevant water authorities site.
There's all sorts of other stuff you can get rebates for, here's the SA site to give you an idea. http://www.sawater.com.au/SAWater/YourHome/SaveWaterInYourHome/Rebates_FAQ.htm

Well I guess it depends on how ofter you do the washing. If you are one of those people that do it everyday no matter how small the load is then a small one will do. If you're like me on the other hand - prefer to do it at the weekend and get as much in as possible to save water and electricity - then the more kilo's it will hold the better.
