Case studies on it make for very sad reading to be honest but yes, interesting on another level. There is an excellent true story book I read at one point about it. I forget the title and author unfortuantely (Ann something was her name), but she was a successful lecturer in french at a university in America, in her 30s and one day everything just snapped and she ended up spending something like 11 years in therapy to 'get over it'.

One of the mental health community agencies may have a copy in their library. Certainly they should know of the book.

I do love a good debate.
By definition the term mentally ill means;

"2 a (1) : of, relating to, or affected by a psychiatric disorder <a mental patient> <mental illness> (2) : mentally disordered : MAD, CRAZY"

Soooo if you want to be technical about terms then "crazy" or "nuts" is simply a slang (or un-PC term) for "affected by a psychiatric disorder" (or mentally ill) to which even SHE admits she was. She IS (or was) nuts by definition and her own admission!

Again, I stress that it is certainly no fault of her own and I sympathise with her childhood plight, however it is pointless to argue whether she is or isn't nuts when our own understanding of the symptoms caused by her abuse and the definitions that we as a people have given these particular conditions, state without compromise, that she is (or was) suffering from "craziness, nuttiness or madness." (Or more politically correct: "Mental illness" or "psychiatric disorder.")

Hence, my reference to being politically incorrect with my terminology but no apology for calling her nuts.

A mental illness is generally synonymous with a psychiatric disorder.
Other mental health issues, such as depression are not stictly speaking, mental illnesses. Thier being labelled as such is a political rather than diagnostic thing.

Finally she does not have a mental illness/psychiatric disorder. Why? because the condition can be successfully treated by therapy as opposed to medication whic more than anything actually suppresses the actual causes and therefore hope of treating it.

I am not referring to any dictionary here. I am a qaulified mental health worker (Dip. Mental Health Work)

Cheers,

Christina

PS: "Nuts" is still a derogatory term regardless of what you say.

So, you are saying that multiple personalitly disorder is NOT a mental illness because it is treatable by means other than medication?
That's like saying a melanoma patient doesn't really have cancer because it can be excised without drugs.

In my PERSONAL opinion (and that of Anne Heche herself) she was nuttier than a fruitcake for some time. Good on her that she got help and can now look back and think "Wow, I was off my rocker then!"

I think we shall have to agree to disagree!
