It's because Google are not obliged to give the date for Streetview as it is their own IP. They are for the Satellite imagery, because they source it from third parties and it is part of their agreement.

The whole Google maps offering is a farce really, nice gimmick, but in terms of factual use it is very wrong. IE: you currently have imagery on their site with a vintage of 2008 overlapped with maps no more than 6 months old. Therefore you get a lot of examples on their site where you will see massive estates on the maps on top of quarries and fields on the imagery.
