Tick Typhus is certainly a concern with tick bites. I know of someone locally who went over to East Gippsland near the NSW/VIC border and came back with typhus. You recover from it alright but you get very sick whilst you have it apparently.

Not sure if we have Lyme Disease in Australia.

Touch and go for a couple of days, but 6 days at the vets, numerous amounts of medication, an additional allergic reaction to something they put on him at the vets(!), a bill of about $2500 and three weeks recuperation (have you tried to keep 2 puppies quiet so that one of them doesn't keel over with a heart attack??) and the little bugger is back to normal.

If you live in an area that is prone to wallabies and/or possums (two of the main carriers of ticks) its vital to daily check your animals and make sure their tick treatment is regular and upto date. Apparently, ticks are a major problem in my little bit of NSW. All our pets were frontlined, but I think the boys needed the next dosage up, so totally my fault

Alf, hope your missus recovers soon, you should have fun doing a daily tick check on her
One of my cats has been missing since Sunday. We called around all the vets and they said search the nearby area really thoroughly, under he house, in the bushes etc because if a tick has got him he will be too ill to move. We have looked everywhere but can't find him.

I read about ticks either one or two weeks before (can't remember) so he was sprayed with frontline, maybe I didn't do it enough though.

If you have one housebound pet and one that ventures further afield, you might still be advised to treat both of them

Frontline provides continual protection against ticks for a good month.

Sorry to hear about your cat. I hope your moggie returns soon.

Unforunately however, in a BAD month the frontline protection is only deemed good enough to deter ticks for a couple of weeks.

Hello there
I was asked to take a look at this bite by a concerned friend, and i am glad i did, this rash look's the same as the 1 my wife had here in the UK in 2006 spring, she did not see the tick so we had no idea what had caused the mark, it did'nt hurt or itch but looked ugly ,so off to the doctors she went the doctor scratched his head and said he did'nt know what is was, but if it did'nt go away in 2 weeks come back and see him again, but ofcoarse it cleared up and we never thought about it again untill March this year when she was struck down with Neuro Borreliosis (Lyme Disease) she is now in a wheelchair and we are faceing the biggest fight of our live's, to get her well again.

If i was you i would get her to a doctor now and ask for antibiotix's Doxycycline is the prefurred treatment at this early stage, but you want a high dose for aleast a month..

The Rash is very inportant it is called Erythema Migrans (EM)
At this early stage if treated correctly it's easy to sort out ,but left untreated or not aggressively enougth it can cause major problems.

Other symptom might be at this stage
Flue like syptoms
tiredness
headaches
Arthralgia joint pain
Myalgia muscle aches

I am not a doctor but i am living trying to look after someone with major problems that could have been stopped in the start if i knew what i no now.

All the best

Darren Smith

Lots of pets are bitten by ticks where we live, despite their owners best efforts to protect them. Pet owners need to examine their pet every single day, just feeling for ticks in the pet's skin. This can be difficult with long-haired breeds but by the time any symptoms appear it might be too late.

It's one of the very real reasons we haven't acquired a dog since we moved here. Nearly everyone we know has lost a cat or dog to a tick bite at some time.

Bandicoots are the biggest carriers.
