Re: Things that are actually free in Australia
Ross River virus that you get from the local mozzies is free
The red backs that have taken up residence in my letter box came free
Thats about it really. The rest of the apparent free stuff i most definatly pay for in tax! And i am certain Julia will find away of introducing a levy for the gaining ross river and a rent tax for the privilage of having the red backs living with us. So i suppose i should enjoy them while i can before they are no longer free.

Library cards...my old city it was $36 per year for the household. I couldn't believe it when they told me it was free here...
Western Australian Museum...there's a donation box, but if you're a cheapskate, I suppose you could bypass it and get in free.
Local community activities...guided bushwalks, movies at the oval, Christmas concerts (ack)...

Crikey, I can't even imagine paying for a library card.
There's also free to air satellite TV, if you know where to look.

I think the Perth Botanic Garden is free as well, while ours back in Canada charges $13.00.

Yeah, it's funny...for all the complaining about prices that we do, some of the attractions that cost money back in Canada are free here:

South Australia's Botanic Gardens in Adelaide, Mt Lofty, and Wittunga are all free.

Got a free Canberra Times newspaper this morning at the hot air balloon launch site outside the old parliament house. For a minute I thought I'd arrived at heaven until I learned that a polystyrene side plate of dodgy looking dutch pancakes and a paper cup of coffee were $8 and and $4 respectively.
...Just as well we brought along a hot freshly baked fruit loaf and a flask of coffee

Re: Things that are actually free in Australia
I'm not sure if people are supposed to interpret 'actually free' as in "I don't believe it...!" because in general, migrants often talk up the things that are free here and not often back in the UK ie. BBQs..
OK - free parking in Melbourne CBD. Sometimes it is outside certain peak hours and when you find that you can slip in and out because all you need is 30mins then it's very cool indeed. And if not free, sometimes the rate posted is very reasonable indeed.
Maybe we should start a thread called 'Things that you pay for in Australia and shouldn't and haven't in the past' - some medical services.

I can't believe no-one else has said any of these. Some positive posts would be really good right now
