I dispute that Science of Diskworld books are kids' novels (and we can agree to disagree on that as it is irrelevant) but even if they were this does not make the information wrong. I did try to point out twice that this information has been available in a number of sources for a while but you seem to be ignoring that.

It appears that you have a problem firstly because your information on evolution was wrong (hence the petulant google slur) and secondly because your level of knowledge on evolution does not even make it up to the standard found in a "kids' novel" (your words).

Although science does get it wrong (or partially wrong) from time to time: Phlogiston and the Ether being prime examples, dark matter and repulsive gravity being potential future examples these hypotheses are eventual weeded out. Science is a human endeavour and is prone to the frailties of human emotion and desire. This is why the scientific method came about. It tries to temper the human aspects.

This to me is the beauty of science whilst others seem to be uncomfortable that it does not come up with a belief and then stick to it. I find the religious equivalents unsatisfactory. The trinity is the prevalent belief in Christianity not because it’s been tested over the years but because the Arians were persecuted and killed off. Similar differences of opinion have led to splits in the other major religions.

I, like any good scientist accept the possibility that evolution could be wrong but there needs to be sufficient evidence to prove that it’s wrong. In my opinion Evolution along with the 2 theories on Relativity are the strongest theories in science today. There seems to be no evidence against them (other than fabricated misunderstandings) and they have all been good at making predictions which have been proved experimentally.

No offence, but thats a silly argument....

a lump of metal - is just that, a lump of metal, it does not need to eat or breeed or survive - so it has no reason to ever alter - so a lump of metal will never evolve - NOTHING that is an inert object evolves.....

Animals and plants evolve because they have to to survive! thats how evolution happens.

A car is a group of inert objects put together by humans - it is not an organic living thing and has no place in discussion about evolution...


Its like saying a cake is put together and takes thought....therefore humans require thought...

Not saying your point about intelligent design is invalid..... just saying don't use inert non-living objects to compare to living organisms

Ah, unless you had a situation a la I Robot, where the machines begin to repair & reproduce themselves, and then you could argue that they were evolving. Another excellent movie.

In fact isn't there some scientists now saying that computers/robots will be more intelligent than humans in 100 years or something?? I read something about it the other day - it's all a bit Terminator. :unsure:

:) Could happen! they're already attaching rat embryo neurons to chips to understand how memory forms, work is also being done on developing super fast chips that use photons rather than electrical charge.

Perhaps mankind's ultimate evolution is to be able to replicate itself as a biomechanical organism? Does that then mean we're destined to become Gods?

Could get a bit overcrowded if we stopped dying.... might need a whole new system of applying to have offspring, or applying to have your life extended again based on how useful you have been recently.... Weird!

(Can't think of a movie analogy for this one.... there should be one though! I will get on to twentieth century fox right away! :D)

Oh for God's sake....

If we are going down the computer evolution thing then the best example ios modren day computer viruses...

Some viruses re-write themselves on the fly to overcome antiu-virus software and to make themselves less detecatable to searches etc.....
