Hi,

I worked in Oz 10 years ago and wondered whether my TFN from then might still be active - what do you reckon? How could I find out?

Your TFN number is for life, so if you had one then, it'll still be yours.

Thanks - wonder how I find out what it is?? I have no paperwork etc, dont think I can even remember my address!!

I think you can do it through the Aussie Tax Office - www.ato.gov.au/

Hope they lost mine was there ten years ago as well. Didn't pay any tax though! Might look a touch dodgy!

I last worked in Oz in 1989 and I rang them when we did our validation trip in 2007. Even though I gave them the wrong address (I thought they had our last address before we left but it turned out to be the second-last flat we rented), they tracked my number down in a couple of minutes.

Ah - just gone through the same thing. Yes, if you have had one before you need to get the same one back otherwise it all gets very confusing. However, it basically becomes dormant when not used so you need to talk to the tax office and they request it to be made active again - this takes about 2-3 weeks and then i't's live. Until then you will not be able to use it as systems will not recognise it. Thus you need to reactive it before anything else?

All you need is your name and date of birth and Bob's your mother's brother!

That's all I had to give the tax office to get re-activate my tfn from 7 years ago..

Well I did mine online. It asked for previous name etc, which I filled it all out saying I had had a tax file number before, and hubbie and I ended up with only onw didget different, so I am assuming someone couldn't be bothered with mine.

OH was last in Australia 17 years ago.. when we arrive last year? yep..still has same TFN.. name and DOB seemed to trace it..
