Hello All
I promised Ozzienurse an update and here it is.
Hobart hated it the first day....so many car showrooms, concrete 70s buildings, cold etc.
From then on....I loved it! Hobart, great proper bars, terrific restaurants and wonderful food, very friendly folk.
OH and I spent Saturday afternoon with a friend of Cas and Carl - Lovely lady with a wonderful daughter.
All I can tell you is, I can't wait to go back and explore some more.
Here's to Tasmania!

You are in Melbourne now then? Permanently? Thanks for the update, very much appreciated. We are heading for Launceston which looks lovely especially the Tamar region.

Permanently in Melbourne and getting happier every day (at least until the next bout of homesickness floors me)!
I could easily become very attached to Tasmania. I don't think you will go far wrong there R.
Next time....a car, some hiking boots and a bigger beer appetite!

You could defy me, but you'll never convince me otherwise Parts of Wales are as beautiful, but Tassie has a special magic somehow - for me anyway

Is it the kind of place you can go to by yourself and explore, especially if you don't have a drivers licence? Is the public transport system good for travellers?

I think a trip straight to Hobart or Lauceston might be better if you don't drive. There are good deals on with Jetstar at the moment. I believe that there are buses but what the service is like, I couldn't tell you. I don't think there are trains(?)
Certainly felt safe enough for me to wander about Hobart for two days on my own with baby whilst husband worked. Bars and restaurants cool and laid back.

Coaches are pretty good, if you are based in Hobart or Launceston. I've managed to tour a large part of Tassie by using the coach services (Tigerline etc) and bushwalking. Certainly do-able for a tourist, though I agree if you were living there you'd maybe need to drive unless you were in Hobart.
