Hi there im hoping this is not a really dumb question but we finally have our visas and are going to adelaide in jan 09 my OH decided to buy a 50" plasma and thinks it will work in aus ive told him it won't as the PAL thingy is different can anyone help with this many thanks!!!!p.s just read a thread re: passports does anyone know how long has to be left on passports on entry to aus?????

Our advice for our hdd tv was that if it was euro compliable (ie can work in different EU countries that have differing voltages, then it might work in Oz.
My question is will UK lightbulbs work over there? We have some energy efficient ones that we want to take, but not much point if they don't work!!

the tv will only work through a set top box eg if you get foxtel (Oz equivalent of sky) then the tv should work fine

we took our LG hd ready 32 inch tv and it worked fine in nsw and qld without any sort of box or foxtel, just worked with a normal aerial, just had a different set up country on set up menu, but speak to people in the shop called the good guys shop and they prob help you

The TV should work although you'll need an adaptor for the plug.
Off the top of my head you need 6 months on the passport but now I look for it I can't remember where I read it.

yes it will work, but you will need to change the plug.

Most electronics manufactures only make 1 model of TV that does all worldwide voltages, and transmission protocols as this is much much cheaper than building equipment for each individual country.

Your better to have a couple of years on your passport, a few spare pages.


your taking the frackin piss here??? yes they will work, but you will need an inverse polarity booster to counteract the phase varience of the pre-ionised atmosphere...

??? no I am not taking the p*** -wondered ifthe fittings screw or bayonets like here, and as the voltage is different I was not sure they would work properly. Excuse me not being practical or technical, but then I am only a female - you must be an aussie if not in fact, then at heart!!:p

hi caroline, just to give you my experience- yes the plugs are 3 pin here but are a different kind to uk ones so all plugs will have to be changed. some appliances come with just 2 pins on them- because theres no earth but they are doubly insulated (just like the uk)
we brought a tv here and you will ususally find that with uk tv's, if plugged in normally you will have either the sound and no picture or picture and no sound but we have put ours thru the video and it works with no probs hope this is helpful:)

The voltage in Australia is the same as in the UK. It's the US that has different voltage.

All your electronic equipment will work in Oz as far as voltage is concerned. (TVs don't work unless Australia is included as a choice in the TV's country set-up menu. But that's nothing to do with voltage. It's to do with the frequency used for sound transmission. Oz uses a different one from the UK.)

And still nobody has answered the light bulb question which I must admit I thought was a reasonable one....

I have been to Oz twice on Holiday and even had to change a light bulb in our apartment becuase the only bulb had gone in the kitchen so nicked the one out of the cuboard, but can't for the life of me remember what the fitting was.. I think it may have been a screw in one.

So not sure if the UK style bayonet bulbs will fit Oz lights... anyone allready there that can help?

Sounds a stupid question to you that know the answer but maybe not that far out.

We've just discovered we can't get lampshades for all our table and floor lamps as the fittings here are smaller. Unfortunately we'd bought up half of Freedom Furniture by the time we learned this (since thankfully returned) and the specialist shop we visited said we'd no chance of getting any. It seems we'll have to change the fittings on those we can (not cheap lamps - a couple we had made from Chinese vases and a couple were custom-made in Indonesia) and replace those we can't.

(The answer is yes, bulbs will work here if they survive the journey. All the fittings in our house are screw-in but I'm not sure if that's typical.)

we have both bayonet and screw lightbulbs here- we also have the full range of sizes here too so no probs with bringing them

I think it's a fantastic idea to take your tv to Oz - we're definitely taking ours with us: how else can we get all those programmes we love, like Eastenders, Corrie & the BBC news :thumbsup:

Jennie, you'll feel quite at home as the Foxtel remote is almost identical to the Sky one :p or at least the one I remember from 6 years ago.

We get so many UK TV programmes here; I hadn't realised most of them were still going. Some nights I think I'm having a terrible dream and moved to the UK by mistake. ;)
