Flying into Sydney and will be there for ten days, celebrate my 40th () birthday whilst there and have a good look around as that is where we will move to. Then over to Adelaide for a few days to see some friends and then onto Perth for a week to see some more friends, then fly home from Perth.

Now I am toying with the idea of extending and coming back to Sydney to look into job situation as my UK contract finished last week (hubby would have to go back for now). Decisions decisions...

Returning to question of relative prices vis-a-vie UK/Oz.Second hand cars here are very cheap at the moment and generally good condition[reputed garages the best].A friend recently purchased a good condition estate car at auction for £125[years MOT valid]but quite high mileage-it was for his daughter[her first car].I recently purchased three iceberg lettuces on Bedford market for a pound[one small, two medium].How do these prices compare to Oz--as I may be visiting soon I'm intrigued to know.Someone who has just returned said it would still be expensive there even at two dollars to the pound--also said property prices were completely out of control and the gov't has failed to do anything about, such as ending subsidies.Would be really interested to hear peoples views

It depends on where you buy them. Woolworths will be expensive, they are for most fruit, veg and meat.
Fruit shops are often much cheaper. But it all varies day to day.
The markets will be cheaper still.

You need to ask the locals where the best prices are.

Some are, some aren't.

Prices are high at my local market, but I was at the Paddy's Markets in Sydney one weekend recently and the produce was cheap & very nice looking.

Would that be lettuga a cappuccio, or lettuga batavia or lettuga romana or lettuga da taglio ?

http://www.theitaliangardener.com.au...DSalad-leaves/ :D

Woolworths already do the Salanova lettuce, but that is Dutch not Italian.. ;)

And as I said, Woolworths is expensive

It was only to explore the beach at our latest location, pretty windy though. Was on 3 beaches yesterday . The best was Shell Beach (between Batemans and Ulladulla). Beautiful there . Currently being buffeted by wind at Ulladulla. The motorhome is rocking back and forth in the wind. Woke me up.

Hi Paulry

Are you here for good or is it a validation visit?

Price of bread here is expensive and if you buy an uncut loaf they tend to be a bit airey....no body to it! We normally get Lawson's and buy loads and put it in the freezer when on offer. It's a tad more expensive but it's a decent size loaf.

As for beer after much research :D between OH and his buddies they've decided on St George and they say Tassie beer is the best - probably something to do with the water. Little Creatures is pretty good and some of the micro brewery stuff but I think that is more expensive.

Drink wine - can be very cheap out here and haven't come across a bad bottle yet.

Glad you liked Dee Why - used to be a bit daggy but has really improved over the last few years. I love the Northern Beaches and that was where we wanted to be before fate sent us to Victoria!

Have fun on the trip!

KK

Just on the validation trip, ATM. So glad we did, it has confirmed to us where our future lies. Will be much more focused with my goals when we get back to London. Australia is proving to be everything we want . Lot's of "wow!" monents. The kids are delighted .

I see that the bread flour is about the same price as the UK so we're definately taking the bread maker with us.

Had some amazing fish and chips in Batemans bay a couple of days ago. The Calamari was good too - so tender.

Are you off to canberra now, spoke to BIL on easter weekend, said weather is good right now, summer gone winter not arrived. Take care in the NSW and Canberra traffic, both places love speed tickets and rules, weve arrived in canberra in a huge  motorhome and partner illegally parked on day one

I noticed that. All the less than healthy food is quite cheap.

Canberra was great. We spent three days there. People are friendly, the city is clean, roads are good - and wide (which is great for my OH because she's planning to return to driving) and traffic - what traffic? :D. Several people that we spoke to said there seems to be more jobs available there recently. We visited two schools for our sons and they are excellent. Both boys looked so pleased with the schools that we have selected for them. Took 3 hours to open bank accounts because the woman opening them for us was so chatty. Went to Cotter Dam - loved it!

Been travelling around in a six berth motorhome - a bit tricky to begin with especially when turning corners and reversing but it's the best choice that we could have made for our validation trip. We've seen and done so much with it. Will definately buy one when we settle here.

Yes, Tassie beer is pretty much the best. James Boags Premium should set you back about $18 for a 6 pack of 345ml bottles. Sounds pricey but is definitely worth it. Boags Draught is nice too, but not quite as nice as Premium, and also not quite as expensive. Usually about $16 for a 6 pack.

Keep well away from Tooheys, VB and Carlton. Resches is nice if you like that sort of thing. Little Creatures is definitely worth a look, as are some of the James Squires beers - check out Sundown - that's got a nice honey flavour to it. Again, don't expect much change from $20.

S

Been sticking with wine for now because my OH can also have a share. Thanks for the tips.

Bread wise, our local Coles/Woolies can charge up to and over $5 a loaf, and I'll be d@mned if I'm gonna pay that (yes I squeak when I walk, I'm a tight @rse!) our local fruit n veg shop which is also really cheap, sells loaves for $1.49 and the bread is just as good if not better! Shop around, that's the key, definitely!

How u finding Oz so far?

Nothing wrong with that. I probably sqeak when I walk as well - even more so with the shite exchange rate

So far I'm really pleased with the country and so are my family. Can't wait to move here :)
