Swimming Pool - Solar Heating
#16
we're in Perth and have solar heating and a pool blanket. The pool is comfortable to use from October to April so long as the weather is consisitant, but realistically i wouldn't guarantee use for all of October and April. When we move i'd like to install a heat pump to allow us to use the pool most or all of the year, we aren't on mains gas anyway but the heat pump seems to be quite a bit cheaper to run than gas.

Gas is ridiculously expensive. And if your kids wear wetsuits in there, you may as well have the pool solar heated, and save a few thousand dollars a year.
From what I can see, a good solar system will comfortably give around 7 1/2 months a year swimming (in Perth). So this is good enough for me.

If I want to spend a 'ridiculous' amount of money on gas heating then I will! My children are tiny, all boys under 4 years old. My husband is a diver so he takes them into the pool in all weather and the nearly 4 year old almost knows how to use a regulator.
I would rather spend 'thousands' (it's not by the way) on an activity that is sports related. If we see sunshine forecast for the weekend, then we use the pool, whatever the temperature outside.

Urm, excuse me? Just offering some personal experience that's all.

We bought a pool cover a few months back, thought I'd share the webite cos it was $250 cheaper than anywhere else we looked.

We have solar heating in ours, but it's broke
Hubby is going to fix it when it gets a bit warmer.

Our two year old doesn't move about fast enough to stay warm yet, so it's great for him. I'll ask my husband what the exact cost is.

No we just use it as and when. Supposed to put it on the night before according to our friend the Gas Engineer, but my cousin came over from Sydney a few weekends back and we forgot! We put it on in the morning and after 4 hours it was up to 28 degrees, that's a nice temperature for the children. If it's windy it's a bit chilly though.

We briefly thought about gas but decided it was too expensive and too much phaff. Just out of interest, how long does it take to heat up when the outside temp is in the 18 - 22 degree span and how much gas do you use in a year.
We haven't put any heating in yet although the pipes are there, we just can't decide what would be best. Our hot water is solar powered and we have to put the electric pump on quite a few night in winter because the low angle of the sun hasn't done it's job. Haven't got a blanket either, I like looking at the water too much
I did see something at a house and garden show but I didn't get the details. I think it was some sort of turbine thing that used the air temp to make the water in pipes hotter but as you can tell I am fairly brainless about such stuff and the OH was bored by that point and wanted to go home

Do you mean that

I'd be interested to find out how much it costs to heat with gas. My 2 boys would love to use the pool all year round. In fact they got in last weekend but got out just as quick
I did warn them.

For us, a cover is a must now in the swim season for saving water and heating what's there - it really works - but outside the season and providing it is raining, as aposed to complete drought, we remove it as its not needed and water does look nice.
This summer I'll augment it with a DIY solar system.
