The death of my Foxtel is getting closer. 2 things left. A way to record and a way to watch sport.

This seems to be the same as the new NowTV box (eg Roku 2/3), just with a slightly different app load. Time will tell if Telstra put it out at $30, the price the NowTV box will be at.

Also time will tell if you can hack the firmware...

Its all changing rapidly. Its interesting to see the FTA networks think they are fine. "Yeah we have reality TV and commercials". That really only sells to a ever declining number of bogans and grey beards.

They couldn't really tell the truth, could they?
"We are living on borrowed time. The well educated (and thus valuable to advertisers) don't bother with us, and the cashed up plebs will desert to better fare elsewhere. We are left with the poor and dumb - and no advertiser is really bothered with that."
their stock value would drop like a stone, it would be a Ratner moment.

The key element is that the alternatives coming along are global offerings. Their potential population size is immense, eg:

North America : 530 million
South America : 388 million
Europe : ~300 million
Oceania: 28 million
= 1.5 billion

And that's before they get stuck in to SE Asia, India and China.

Plenty of scope to grow above 100+ million subscribers without problem. At which point they have the scale to outbid and out invest all national broadcasters or similar. All with no adverts (which people hate).

Frankly, if I were one of the three usual Aussie suspects, I'd be looking to seriously shift my game to both deliver global-ready content AND to deliver local content that people might care about (eg News) that won't work on catchup. Retool the 'GEM', '11' etc. to get setup for that market, in readiness for when they have to dump their main channels entirely.

Only a matter of time before the streaming services realise they can make some cash out of advertising though.

Not so sure. People hate adverts and they interrupt the show.

I think they may rather go the 'sponsored show' route - particularly if the usual ad supported commercial networks fade away. It's much less objectionable to have 10 secs as part of the title sequence than 3 mins at multiple points during the show. Plus, of course, product placement.

Thought occurs - maybe the Oz networks should have a reality show with winner revamping the line up for a year....

Yeah exactly. Can't see it being traditional TV ad breaks, instead in the sponsor route you fly in fly out banner. Something a little less intrusive but more subliminal.

Hulu already do and as they are for a US audience, they are for shit you can't buy

Interestingly, on Windows at least, they sometimes give you the option to watch a 60sec ad at the beginning of a show instead of multiple ads during. They also often allow you to choose what ads you want to watch - so car ads instead of insurance for example

Yeah, I also like the technical aspect of cord-cutting. I now have too many devices that are surplus to requirements!

I've got them all - Roku (x2), Amazon Fire TV and Stick, Chromecast, WDTV etc. All good devices but none have the do-it-all capability of a HTPC

Yes, loads of big stars now making shows on streaming services

Maybe Hollywood should be worried too

When streaming services inevitably get major sports onboard then it is safe to say that it will be game over for terrestrial and satellite/cable providers. This is the only area where they still have an advantage - and the rise of streaming means that sports (and their money) will eventually move there
