Default Snake Handlers

Okay, another post on snakes from me.

A couple of months ago we saw two 1m long brown snakes around our family/pool area, as well as seeing 4 other smaller snakes on our lawn (all at different times). We called the Shire and private snake handlers who all said, they wouldn't come out unless the snake is in the house or causing danger outside. Fair enough.
However, last Saturday we were at a friends house in a suburb that is in no way rural or remote. The house is old style with living areas on 2 floors. Adults were sitting in the living area upstairs, and the kids were downstairs playing computer games...you can see where this is going.
A snake was in the room where the kids were. The kids saw it and reacted properly (jumped up onto a chair and kept their feet up). The snake went under pot belly stove in the room.
The local Snake handler was called, he wouldn't come out unless the snake was in the middle of the room and could be seen.
The local Ranger woudn't attend and couldn't recommend anyone that was experienced either.
Another snake handler in the next suburb said he would have come out but couldn't as he was fixing his reticulation.
A further call to a Snake Hander in a different suburb resulted in " I will come round tomorrow, the cost is $100 call out fee and $50 every 30 minutes thereafter"

What is the point of having snake handlers?

Between the 4 of us there we managed to get the snake out from it's hiding place and kill it.

WTF are the snake handlers all about. Would you stay in your house knowing a potentially venomous snake was there too?
